Evaluation!

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Plot Conventions that are often established in teaser trailers: -Often take place in isolated setting where the victims are completely alone and there is little help of rescue such as the house in the woods in Human Centipede. -There is always a struggle between “good” and “evil” or the state of equilibrium and the cause of disequilibrium. This is seen in the obvious “evil” in The Omen -Evil character introduced into enviroment that the audience trust, such as in the Final Destination films. -As there is not a lot of time for the characters to be presented in trailers, stereotypes are often used. These often include good looking, brave, male lead; promiscuous blonde; falsely brave bully and an overly scared character. These are clearly seen in the Scream films as they are based around stereotypical horror clichés and so sumemerise the stereotypes well. -The identity of the feared evil, is rarely revealed in teaser trailers as it builds suspence and also does not give away plot details, for example, like in Shutter Island where the puzzlement over the villain in the teaser reflects the how unsure and confused about it the viewer is through the film.
  2. Technical Conventions: -The use of fast cuts builds tension and means the viewer is not always clear of what is happening causing suspense such as in House of Wax where a succession of short clips in used that give us an idea of the dangerous situation the characters will be in but give away no major plot elements. -Fade to black is a common technique as it creates a sense of mystery and slows down the pace, ready to shock the viewer with a sudden contrast back to fast pace. It creates a “calm before the storm”. This is seen in the Let Me In trailer as at first, a sense of calm is created introducing the two young central characters. -A long silence, suddenly broken by diegetic sound, such a scream, gasp, roar etc is a technique used to make the viewer jump, as seen in the trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 -There are certain types of diegetic sound we expect from horror films such as childish nursery rhymes as their innocence is disturbing in the horrific environment in which the trailer takes place, for example, the song the plays over the trailer for the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street -Signifiers are a very important part of mise-en-scene a they can subconsciously reveal deeper elements of the story and communicate the films message. They ate common in horror films and often used in trailers to portray the meaning of the film in the short time available. This is seen in the trailer for Dead Silent and the recurring imagery of dolls. -High and low angle shots are very powerful as they can give and take away power from characters simply and also can make the viewer feel uncomfortable as they are forced to become a sadistic voyeur. They are used well in the Saw movie trailers as the victims are seen as pawns in Jigsaw’s sick game.
  3. EXXPPAANNDD!!!!!! Isolated settings - Haunted House Evil force introduced into everyday world - The teaser begins calmly before an unknown danger is introduced, changing the equilibrium Unknown, faceless “evil” - We have no idea who the villain is Use of fast cuts - Quick sequence towards the end of teaser Fades to black - Mark transition from party to horror atmosphere Diegetic sound used to shock - Sudden scream at end of teaser Reoccurring imagery or signifier - Bottle spinning High and low angles - Low angle at beginning contrasted with high angle at end.
  4. Actor Credits: It is conventional to try and attract audience to your film by exploiting the names of who is staring in it. I have named the three main characters in order of their importance in the plot of the film. Although, as my film uses teenage actors, it is likely they are not well known, if they become more famous in the future it will reflect well on the film if I show this is were they started and attract viewers well after the release in years to come. Image: -My image is taking up one third of the space as the is photographic convention to work in thirds. It also allows the text to dominate the poster as it takes up a higher percentage of the space. -I have decided to use the image of the main character as she is most central to the plot and will appear most in the film. When the audience see the poster and go and see the film, they will expect her to feature and feel comfortable that they have already been made to identify with one of the characters. They will also care about her safety in the dangerous situation in the film the most as they are more aware of her importance than the other characters. -I have edited the image unconventionally as I have decided not to use “airbrushing” to perfect elements of her face and body. This is because my film is not a Hollywood blockbuster that relies on glamour and appearance to sell the film. I wanted the audience to identify more with the characters, and so wanted them to be more “real”.I have only edited the “curves” and “brightness” to give the image the affect I wanted. -The image uses mainly the colours white and black. This means the image coordinates with the rest of the artwork which also hase this colour scheme and also contrast with the red lettering, allowing it to stand out. This is quite conventional as the title is the most important part of the poster and needs to be seen, however it is unconventional to use so few colours but in research, I saw it work well in this poster for Scar 3D. I like the stylised, minimalist, retro affect it creates. Age Rating: It is conventional to include an age rating as it allows the poster to attract the right selection of audience that it is aimed at. It also adds convenience to the viewer. Our film is a 15 and so our poster would not appeal to a small child. Also, although it may appeal to someone age 14, they would not be able to see the film. Knowing they cannot watch the film will make them want to see it more and so attract a wider audience the next year when 14 year olds are 15 and can finally watch the film. Billing Box: It is necessary to include a billing box and it gives credit to everyone involved in the production of the film. The style of condensed typing means it does not distract us from the rest of the poster, but is there for the viewers reference. I have used a conventional order and style, and included the logos of companies involve underneath. Date Line: The date line “coming soon” will intrigue the viewer and create a sense of anticipation. I have made it quite bold on the page so that it is seen but does not dominate. Film Title: -I though this was the most important element of the poster so it takes up two thirds of the space. This is not usually used as image is often considered more important. However my large block lettering give sit more more of a convention retro feel, reminiscent of the popular block lettering style used in, for example the popular “Frankie Says Relax” t-shirts. -I decided not to use a decorative font as I preferred the retro style of using a plain, bold, sans serif font that I saw in my research into 1960’s film posters. “Compactor” stands out on the page and does not look tacky or unprofessional. It also meant I could add affects to it. -The affect of editing block text can be seen in the posters for both the 1960 and 1998 versions of the film “Psycho”. In that context, the rip could refelct the slashing action of the knife that Norman Bates uses on his victims or a “fracture” in this fractured personality. In my poster, I have created a smashed affect to echo the smashing of the bottle which is a key signifier in our film. -Red is probably the strongest colour as far a connotations are concerned. It is intrinsically linked with danger, blood, panic and violence, but also the underlying love stories that take place during the film. Most horror film posters feature the colour red. Tag Line: A tag line attracts the audience to the film by subtlely referencing a plot element that creates a sense of intrigue in the viewer. It can sometimes, in my case, be linked to a popular saying or cliché and usually creates a very vague idea of what to expect, compelling the audience to discover the full story of the film and want to see it.
  5. -In my second poster I wanted to do something more unique and unusual. I was inspired by a London Underground poster to experiment with putting images into my text, making that the only major element of the poster. I liked how this technique was used to create suspense in the poster for the 1967 film “Robbery”. -I used a bold font so there would be lots of space to put my images. I made them different sizes, experimenting with perspective and creating a collage affect. -I have included the images of four of the main characters in this poster, more reflective of my large cast than my previous poster. -I decided I wanted to use a colour filter as it made the poster look more stylised and created suspense and drama. For the reasons outlined in my previous slide, I chose red.
  6. Limited by time.
  7. Research: -I used the Internet Movie Database and Movie Insider to research films to analyse and they are both really useful website. -IMDb has every film ever made recorded along with information and a synopsis. This was really useful as it meant I could gain a knowledge of many films without having to invest the time to watch them all. -Movie Insider lists all the films coming out in the next year. This meant I could research current films and find out modern conventions and also observe what is currently happening in the world of film. -Once I had decided on films to research that were relevant, from my own knowledge, recommendations from friends and the above websites, I used the website YouTube to watch their teaser trailers for inspiration and develop a knowledge of convention to use in my own teaser.
  8. -I used the programmes Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint to present all of my research, planning and evaluating. -I used my mobile to take photographs of a real film set that helped me when I was filming myself. -I presented my entire Media Studies coursework through my blog, made using the website Blogger. This allows me to digitally share my work with the world and upload it easily. -In order for my Word documents and presentations to appear on my blog, I used the website Slideshare that lets you upload you file and creates and embeddable code that can be put on blog posts. -Another tool I used in presenting my research is the website Animoto, a video slideshow creating site. I upload images that inspired me in the creation of my teaser and the website put them into a visually appealing montage. This again had an embed code so that I could put it on my blog.
  9. -I made spreadsheets detailing what I planned to do over the coarse of my Advanced Portfolio on Microsoft Excel. This helped me to keep to deadlines, monitor how I was progressing use my time affectively. -When we were planning our shoots, we used the social networking site Facebook as all our cast used it and it is a quick and reliable way to send a message to a large group of people. The “inbox” function allows you to send a message to many people and for you replies and for all replies to be shown on the same page for everyone to view. This made arranging times easy.
  10. For my final poster, I had to use Photoshop as the tools I wanted were not available on Elements. -To create this affect I first created my text layer. -I edited the photograph I wanted to use, adding “noise” to give the image a grainy effect and adjusted the curves to give greater contrast between black and white areas. -I then used a selection of the text to create a layer mask on top of the image, allowing the image to show through the text. -I overlayed a red layer with the opacity option set to “multiply” - colouring the image and text together.
