Read the two selections below.

Davy Crockett and the Frozen Dawn David Crockett: An American Hero
Davy Crockett was a smart and
brave American who lived a long
time ago. When he was only three
years old, he saved his family by
wrestling a bear to the ground.
Davy Crockett did so many
brave things in his life that he was
elected to Congress.
Davy was smart, too. One winter,
it was so cold that the dawn froze
solid. The ice made Earth stop
spinning. Davy figured out how
to melt the ice and make Earth
spin again.
David Crockett was an American
legend and hero. He was born on
August 17, 1786, in a small cabin
near the mouth of Limestone
Creek, in Tennessee. Crockett only
went to school for six months
as a child. However, he served
as a member of the Tennessee
legislature from 1821 to 1824. He
then served as a member of the
United States Congress. Crockett
died a hero’s death in the Battle
of the Alamo in 1836.
