2) How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Eloise Clark
+ Typical stereotypes of teenagers
associated with rock music:
 The music genre of my magazine is rock.
 Which has a dominant representation of teenagers, who
listen to that music, often associated with violence, drugs,
troublesome behaviour etc.
 I have tried to use my photography carefully to avoid
portraying this sort of label on the readers of my magazine.
 I want my magazine to represent rock music and teenagers
as two subjects that can complement each other.
+ My representation of teenagers:
Looking at my magazine and another rock magazine, there is a
difference.
My image is a close up
of my artists face. In
this magazine they are
selling it through the
use of the women’s
bodies
The facial expressions
on the women on this
cover are much more
aggressive than my
model
The outfits in the other
magazine are all black
and skin tight, using
sex to sell the
magazine.
+ Class representation:
 My magazine is predominantly aimed at the middle class.
 This is represented in my main artist and the article on the double
page spread.
 The writing is not particularly of high standard like you would find
in The Guardian but it is written along the lines of other rock
magazines such as Kerrang!
 The way I have dressed my models also shows that my magazine is
for the popular market.
 The images on my contents page show that it is a magazine for the
middle class. I styled my models specifically to represent the
popular market.
Make-up designed
in a more rock but
everyday fashion.
Not representing a
sexual image often
associated with
rock.
Clothes are casual but
suitable for the genre.
Nothing particularly
fancy but nothing
scruffy either
No images representing
typical “rock behaviour”
stereotypes. All clean
and enjoyable
photography.
+ Race and Sexuality
 I have not set out a particular target for these social groups as
I have no problem with who reads my magazine.
 Although my magazine is dominantly representing the white
middle class but it is here for anyone for read.
 I have not tried to shape my magazine to represent a
particular sexuality, my models are heterosexual but that
does not mean my magazine is not open for anyone else to
read it.
 This is a social group I did not put too much thought into as I
did not want a controversial magazine.
