The New England Aquarium is known worldwide for
its emphasis on marine conservation. One of its main
exhibits is the Giant Ocean Tank, a four-story tank with
a handmade coral reef and thousands of sea creatures.
Sea turtles, sting rays, eels, and fish live together in the
200,000-gallon tank. While the depth of the tank varies,
parts of the exhibit are 26 feet deep.
3. The habitat inside the tank is delicate and detailed and
meant to reflect the type of environment that
Caribbean-dwelling sea creatures would inhabit. The
3,000 coral pieces inside the tank were handmade by
aquarium artists.
The Aquarium's resident green sea turtle, Myrtle, is
one of tank's most noticeable inhabitants. She has lived
in the Giant Ocean Tank since 1970. However, it's easy
for visitors to spot other intriguing creatures like
moray eels, barracuda, Kemp's ridley sea turtles, and
loggerhead sea turtles.
