My talk from All Things Open 2014 Over the past four years, OpenStack has become a widely adopted cloud operating system. Cloud computing has made many tasks like creating new servers and networks easy for end users by creating abstractions above the infrastructure. However, cloud operators need to maintain not only the cloud operating system itself, but all of the underpinning systems beneath it. The challenges of managing a set of distributed systems isn’t small, but with proper tooling is well within reach. This talk will discuss considerations for cloud operators such as logging, storage, monitoring, high availability, configuration management with a focus on OpenStack clouds with a focus on open source solutions for common issues encountered when operating an OpenStack cloud. We’ll consider data gathered from the community and discuss “day 1″ and “day 2″ concerns as well as established patterns and technology choices among OpenStack deployers today.

Cloud Expo New York: OpenFlow Is SDN Yet SDN Is Not Only OpenFlow Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new approach to networking, both to the data centre, and as a connection across data centers. SDN defines the networks in software, meaning designers can operate, control, and configure networks without physical access to the hardware. Effectively, SDN frees the network and applications from underlying hardware. New technologies are making it possible for enterprises to use virtualized networks over any type of hardware in any physical location - including unifying physical data centers and federating cloud-based data centers. In his session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Patrick Kerpan, the CEO and co-founder of CohesiveFT, will highlight customer use cases to demonstrate a broader SDN definition.

AppSensor is an OWASP project that defines a conceptual framework, methodology, guidance and reference implementation to design and deploy malicious behavior detection and automated responses directly within software applications. There are many security protections available to applications today. AppSensor builds on these by providing a mechanism that allows architects and developers to build into their applications a way to detect events and attacks, then automatically respond to them. Not only can this stop and/or reduce the impact of an attack, it gives you incredibly valuable visibility and security intelligence about the operational state of your applications.

It is a true fact that performance experienced by real world users has direct impact on our application adoption rate.Good performance increases retention and conversion rates. Our primary aim should be to deliver value to an user, and make sure that they get the best possible user experience that delights them, and keeps them coming back for more. In this regard, monitoring user behaviour becomes imperative as it provides key metrics for web application performance. While developing web applications, developers test in their local environments, and also do user acceptance testing. But what happens once the application goes out onto the real world? The case I’m making here talks about analysing application performance once its in the hands of real users. This is where real user monitoring a.k.a R.U.M comes in picture. R.U.M captures performance metrics such as bandwidth and page/view load times, user location, device type, carrier speed, application errors, Ajax request and application usage along with custom performance metrics that provides actionable business intelligence. In R.U.M, we can then visualize performance over time for key metrics based on different average, geometric mean, median or percentile calculations. The performance data can be drilled down further on the basis of geography, device, error encountered, speed etc.

At the StampedeCon 2015 Big Data Conference: The starting point for this project was a MapReduce application that processed log files produced by the support portal. This application was running on Hadoop with Ruby Wukong. At the time of the project start it was underperforming and did not show good scalability. This made the case for redesigning it using Spark with Scala and Java. Initial review of the Ruby code revealed that it was using disk IO excessively, in order to communicate between MapReduce jobs. Each job was implemented as a separate script passing large data volumes through. Spark is more efficient in managing intermediate data passed between MapReduce jobs – not only it keeps it in memory whenever possible, it often eliminates the need for intermediate data at all. However, that alone not brought us much improvement since there were additional bottlenecks at data aggregation stages. The application involved a global data ordering step, followed by several localized aggregation steps. This first global sort required significant data shuffle that was inefficient. Spark allowed us to partition the data and convert a single global sort into many local sorts, each running on a single node and not exchanging any data with other nodes. As a result, several data processing steps started to fit into node memory, which brought about a tenfold performance improvement.

The presentation "How overlay networks can make public clouds your global WAN" presented by Ryan Koop on Oct 24, 2013 at LASCON in Austin, TX. Enterprises, organizations and governments are realizing the benefits of cloud flexibility, cost savings, scalability and connectivity. Yet the traditional approach focuses too much on the underlying infrastructure, instead of the applications. So who is making solutions for the people who work at the application layer? Are software-defined things secure? With a focus on application-layer integration, governance and security, overlay networks let developers, and the enterprise apps they work with, use the public clouds as a global WAN network, not just extra storage. Developers can build on top of overlay networking to extend traditional networks to the cloud with added security such as encryption, IPsec connections, VLANs and VPNs into the public cloud networks. Prime examples are the previously cost-prohibitive projects can now use public clouds as global points of presence to create cloud WAN to partners and customers.
