BUDDHISM
WHAT IS IT?
• Buddhism is a religion and dharma that encompasses a
variety of traditions, beliefs and spiritual practices largely
based on teachings attributed to Gautama Buddha
• Two major extant branches of Buddhism are generally
recognized by scholars:
–Theravada Buddhism (Pali: "The School of the Elders")
–Mahayana Buddhism (Sanskrit: "The Great Vehicle").
SAMSĀRA
–continual repetitive
cycle of birth and
death that arises from
ordinary beings'
grasping and fixating
on a self and
experiences.
• Human, any kind of
animal and several
types of
supernatural beings.
KARMA
• the force that drives saṃsāra
• Specifically refers to those actions of body, speech or
mind that springfrom mental intent (cetanā), and bring
about a consequence or phala "fruit" or vipāka "result".
THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS
• The truth of dukkha (suffering, anxiety, unsatisfactoriness
• The truth of the origin of dukkha
• The truth of the cessation of
• The truth of the path leading to the cessation of
NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH
• A.K.A - The Fourth of the Buddha's Noble Truths
• Consists of a set of eight interconnected factors or
conditions, that when developed together, lead to the
cessation of dukkha
NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH
–Right View (or Right
Understanding)
–Right Intention (or
Right Thought)
–Right Speech
–Right Action
–Right Livelihood
–Right Effort
–Right Mindfulness
–Right Concentration
PRECEPTS/MORAL CODE
• not to take the life of anything living
• not to take anything not freely given
• to abstain from sexual misconduct and sensual
overindulgence
• to refrain from untrue speech
• to avoid intoxication, that is, losing mindfulness.
BUDDHAS
• A Buddha is a fully awakened being who has completely
purified his mind of the three poisons of desire, aversion
and ignorance
• No longer bound by Samsara and has ended
the suffering which unawakened people experience in life.
TOLERANCE
• Real Buddhism is very
tolerant and not
concerned with labels like
'Christian', 'Moslem',
'Hindu' or 'Buddhist'; that
is why there have never
been any wars fought in
the name of Buddhism.
