Grand Rapids Community College faces challenges serving its large commuter student population with limited on-campus resources. Pronto instant messaging was introduced in 2006 to help address these challenges by allowing online communication between students and instructors. It has since expanded to include video conferencing, application sharing, queued chat functions for tutoring and office hours. The college plans to continue enhancing Pronto's capabilities like adding emergency notifications, targeted messaging and expanding its use for help desk, tutoring and more collaborative learning tools to better engage and support students.
