This document provides an introduction to bullying prevention. It defines bullying as negative actions repeatedly targeted at someone who has trouble defending themselves. Various types of bullying are described, including verbal, social, physical, and cyber bullying. Bullying differs from other interactions in that the negative behaviors are intentional, repetitive, and involve an imbalance of power between students. The triad involved in bullying consists of the bully, the target, and bystanders. Suggested ways to discuss bullying prevention with students include defining key terms, role playing scenarios, and reading related picture books.

2. What is bullying?
A person is bullied when he or
she is exposed, repeatedly and over
time, to negative actions on the
part of one or more other
persons, and he or she has
difficulty defending himself or herself.

• bullying through lies and false rumors
• having money or other things taken or
damaged

• The negative behaviors are intentionally
targeted at a specific individual and do not
occur by accident.
• The bullying behaviors are repetitive in
nature and are not a onetime event.
• There is an imbalance of power between
the students involved in the incident.
