2. In February 2015, Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon
officially launched its operations in Ethiopia. This
public-private partnership works to reduce
cervical and breast cancer deaths in the
developing world. In the past few years, the
partnership has made more than 100,000 cancer
screenings possible in Zambia, Tanzania, and
Botswana. In Ethiopia, the partnership plans to
build upon existing health care programs to
bolster screening and treatment of cervical
cancer, as well as launch prevention initiatives.
Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes
of death among women living in sub-Saharan
Africa.
3. In Ethiopia, cervical cancer is the second most
common cancer among women and causes 16.5
percent of female cancer deaths.
Ethiopia has made the treatment of non-
communicable diseases a primary interest, and Pink
Ribbon Red Ribbon is excited to collaborate with the
Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health to tackle the
problem of cervical cancer. Adopting a regional
approach, the partnership will offer screening and
treatment programs at 33 sites throughout the
country. The partnership aims to create stronger
health care systems overall while training health care
workers in the key issues that will ultimately save
women’s lives.
