2. Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon, a health partnership
that benefits from the support of entities such
as Susan G. Komen, the George W. Bush
Institute, and the U.S. government, has
expanded its reach into Ethiopia and Namibia.
Over the last three years, the group has
brought screening for cervical cancer to more
than 100,000 women in Zambia, Tanzania, and
Botswana. Cervical cancer kills more women in
Sub-Saharan Africa than any other disease and
poses a particularly large threat to women in
Ethiopia and Namibia.
3. The expansion was made possible with the
help of a number of partners.
GlaxoSmithKline pledged $2 million to help
with national strategy and vaccination in
Ethiopia. GE Healthcare kicked in $500,000
to help the Ethiopian-American Doctors
Group develop a cancer center in the
Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. Pink
Ribbon Red Ribbon will provide funds for
health workers in Namibia, and the
International Atomic Energy Agency will
contribute to the fight against cervical
cancer in both Namibia and Ethiopia.
