To live is to communicate. Words are the building blocks of
communication. Words connected by thoughts, feelings, and ideas are
expressed in sentences. Sentences are structured in a variety of ways.
Understaning the many roles that words play in the sentence will help you to
write expressively and vividly.
Read the story “”Lives Lived” Stephen Babiyczuk” by Lorraine Finkle.
NOTES
A noun is a thing – an object, a person, a place or an idea.
It usually funtions in a subject object role in a sentence.
subject object
Ex. Grandpa worked as a labourer.
There are: a) common nouns : telegram
b) proper nouns : Magnus Avenue
c) collective : team
d) abstract nouns : honest
Assignment
1. Provide an example from the story of each type of noun. Complete
the chart and name the type of noun.

NOTES
Adjectives are words that describe nouns, such as the travel-
worn clothes.
Adjectives come in three forms:
1. single words :blonde
2. as phrases :the girl with the blonde hair
3. as clauses :the girl who has blonde hair
Assignment
1. Write three vivid adjectives from the story.
NOTES
A VERB is an action word. A verb tells what the subject does,
is, or what happens to it.
verb
Ex. Sam listens to the teacher.
ADVERBs modify verbs and adjectives.
adverb
Ex. Extremely strong horses.
Assignment
1. Copy two sentences from the story where each uses an expressive
adverb.
2. Underline the verb and circle the adverb.

Words connected by thoughts, feelings, and ideas are expressed in sentences. Sentences are structured in a variety of ways. Understaning the many roles that words play in the sentence will help you to write expressively and vividly. Read the story “”Lives Lived” Stephen Babiyczuk” by Lorraine Finkle. NOTES A noun is a thing – an object, a person, a place or an idea. It usually funtions in a subject object role in a sentence. subject object Ex. Grandpa worked as a labourer. There are: a) common nouns : telegram b) proper nouns : Magnus Avenue c) collective : team d) abstract nouns : honest Assignment 1. Provide an example from the story of each type of noun. Complete the chart and name the type of noun. Noun Type

Adjectives come in three forms: 1. single words :blonde 2. as phrases :the girl with the blonde hair 3. as clauses :the girl who has blonde hair Assignment 1. Write three vivid adjectives from the story. NOTES A VERB is an action word. A verb tells what the subject does, is, or what happens to it. verb Ex. Sam listens to the teacher. ADVERBs modify verbs and adjectives. adverb Ex. Extremely strong horses. Assignment 1. Copy two sentences from the story where each uses an expressive adverb. 2. Underline the verb and circle the adverb.
