Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a way to design material that includes everyone, including those with disabilities. UDL helps to “level the playing field” when it comes to reaching all learners. In a school setting it causes teachers to re-think their curriculum so that their lessons can appeal and reach every learner. There are 3 main guidelines that UDL follows: Multiple Means of Representation, Action and Expression, as well as Engagement. This means in a classroom you should be able to present a lesson in different ways as well as be able to allow the students to learn the material in different ways and create activities in different ways
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) effects 3-5% of school aged children. There is no known cause of ADHD but most students are often diagnosed around the age of 7. Some people that have ADHD can suffer from lack of attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
iPads and digital touchpads allow the user to interact with their learning. By using the UDL guidelines, an iPad is able to hit each guideline and extend it beyond with what is needed. Starting with Representation, iPads would be given to each child in a classroom and they would be able to customize their settings to aid with their learning. With Action and Expression, students would be giving a physical responses by interacting with their learning environment. Students are given multiple means of engagement by the different applications that are available.
When using an iPad or another iDevice, there always seems to be an “app for that”! Applications that go through the Apple iTunes store are there to help make things easier and give people a better understanding of what information is being presented.
