4. About CIP Genebank
CIP Genebank use a QMS (quality management system) to
give the users of the Genebank a visible assurance of the
quality of the germplasm being distributed.
CIP is the custodian of one
the world’s largest in vitro
collection for potato,
sweetpotato and ARTC.
CIP is the custodian of
one of the largest clonal
plant cryobanks.

7. General Specifications for Barcodes and Media
Definition and benefits
A barcode is a machine-readable representation of information interpreted by the scanner.
A barcode help in:
1. A simple way and fast to acquire item information to identify it for example in conservation
the accession number
2. A simple way and fast to collect general information of the item for example in germplasm
distribution the order number, doi and accession number
3. Track the item for example with the inventory number
Therefore use barcodes in Genebanks is a good data management practice to gain efficiencies

Types
Symbologies Description
1D (linear) Code 39 Can encode both numeric and alpha data
Code 128 For a wider selection of characters arose
than Code 39
2D Data Matrix
A Data Matrix Code is a two-dimensional
(2D) code that consists of black and white
modules. Capacity to recover 20-30% of
data
Though usually for small size items.
Data Matrix Code can store large amounts
of data for encoding, making them
appropriate for a wide variety of
applications.
QR
A QR Code is another type of 2D code
that consists of black modules arranged in
a square pattern on a white background.
Capacity to recover 20-30% of data
Though usually for websites and not for
small size items. QR is pretty looks.
QR Code can store large amounts of data

61. New GRIN-Global Tools
GRIN-Global Wizards and Mobile App
To facilitate daily work of genebank staff like technicians, supervisors, curators and
administrators was developed new software tools for the GRIN-Global platform.
Two types of GRIN-Global tools were developed:
1. Five Wizards for Curator Tool to handle data more smoothly
- Search Wizard
- Update Wizard
- Trait Wizard
- Print Wizard
- List Comparison Wizard
2. One mobile app for Android and Windows for data collection about inventories
The tools are Open Source and under Apache license 2.0
