Body
Conclusion
A paragraph is a group of sentences about one
main idea.
Look at the diagram at your left side, which shows
the shape and format of a typical paragraph.
Notice that the first line of the line is indented.
Indent the first sentence of every new paragraph.
Start the first sentence at about ½ inch (1,2 cms) to
the right of the left margin line.
THE SHORT COMPOSITION

idea. If the short composition is just one paragraph,
that paragraph will include 1)the main idea,
2)supporting ideas and details, and 3)the conclusion
In a short composition with several paragraphs,
the main idea is the first paragraph. The conclusion
is in last paragraph.
1. Read the following short composition. Then answer the questions below it by giving the sentence

When I got to the phone and picked it up, a
strange voice asked for Julie.
5
Ialso get wrong numbers when I’m in the bathtub. 6
For example, last weekend I was enjoying a
nice hot bath when, of course, the phone rang. 7
At first, I didn’t move, but then I worried that it might
be an important call 8
I grabbed a towel and rushed to the phone, just to hear a voice ask, “Is this Fran`s
Homestyle Restaurant?”
9
Sometimes I get a wrong number when I’m cooking. 10
Last night the phone rang while I was
preparing dinner and the person calling couldn’t believe that he got the wrong number. 11
He started
arguing with me about names. 12
I hung up furiously and rushed back to my burned dinner.13
. Well, I`ve
had enough so from now on I will let my answering machine pick up phone calls.

Honesty is Best
“Honesty is the best policy.” This famous saying from Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote
means that we have to be honest in all situations. I agree, especially because of what
happened to my grandfather about three years ago. He got sick, and his doctor secretly
told us my grandfather had cancer. His doctor puts him in a hospital, but he did not tell
my grandfather the truth right away. During the first three months in the hospital, was
more and more tired, and the cancer just kept getting worse. Then the doctor told him
the truth – that he had cancer and would live for only a few months. I thought my
grandfather would not able to accept the truth, but a strange thing happened. He began
enjoying his life. He was even able to leave the hospital sometimes to do whatever he
really wanted to do. To my surprise, my grandfather lived for another year.

The paragraph

  • 1. EDWIN ELIÉCER ALVARADO GARCÍA www.profealvarado.com WORKSHOP: MAIN IDEA __________, JANUARY ____th , 2018 Title Main Idea Body Conclusion A paragraph is a group of sentences about one main idea. Look at the diagram at your left side, which shows the shape and format of a typical paragraph. Notice that the first line of the line is indented. Indent the first sentence of every new paragraph. Start the first sentence at about ½ inch (1,2 cms) to the right of the left margin line. THE SHORT COMPOSITION A short composition states and develops one main idea. If the short composition is just one paragraph, that paragraph will include 1)the main idea, 2)supporting ideas and details, and 3)the conclusion In a short composition with several paragraphs, the main idea is the first paragraph. The conclusion is in last paragraph. 1. Read the following short composition. Then answer the questions below it by giving the sentence numbers. Wrong Number 1 Phone calls for the wrong number seem to come at very bad times. 2 For example, a few weeks ago I was enjoying a snack and a movie when suddenly the phone rang. 3 As I was running to the phone, I tripped over the dog and found myself on the floor. 4 When I got to the phone and picked it up, a strange voice asked for Julie. 5 Ialso get wrong numbers when I’m in the bathtub. 6 For example, last weekend I was enjoying a nice hot bath when, of course, the phone rang. 7 At first, I didn’t move, but then I worried that it might be an important call 8 I grabbed a towel and rushed to the phone, just to hear a voice ask, “Is this Fran`s Homestyle Restaurant?” 9 Sometimes I get a wrong number when I’m cooking. 10 Last night the phone rang while I was preparing dinner and the person calling couldn’t believe that he got the wrong number. 11 He started arguing with me about names. 12 I hung up furiously and rushed back to my burned dinner.13 . Well, I`ve had enough so from now on I will let my answering machine pick up phone calls. 1. Which sentence states the main idea of the composition? ___ 2. Which sentence gives the first supporting idea? ___ 3. Which sentences give details about the first supporting idea? ___ 4. Which sentences give additional supporting ideas? ___ 5. Which sentence states the conclusion? ___ 2. The following sentences give instructions for a science experiment showing kinetic energy which is energy of motion. The sentences are not in the correct order. Number the sentences to show the correct order. ___a) Measure the temperature of the sand. ___b) Then fill the cup one third full of sand. ___c) Measure the temperature of the sand again. ___d)Shake the sand inside the cup for one minute __ e) The following experiment demonstrate kinetic energy. __ f) At the end, you will discover that the sand is warmer. __ g) Start with a large paper cup with a lid, some sand, and a thermometer. Honesty is Best “Honesty is the best policy.” This famous saying from Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote means that we have to be honest in all situations. I agree, especially because of what happened to my grandfather about three years ago. He got sick, and his doctor secretly told us my grandfather had cancer. His doctor puts him in a hospital, but he did not tell my grandfather the truth right away. During the first three months in the hospital, was more and more tired, and the cancer just kept getting worse. Then the doctor told him the truth – that he had cancer and would live for only a few months. I thought my grandfather would not able to accept the truth, but a strange thing happened. He began enjoying his life. He was even able to leave the hospital sometimes to do whatever he really wanted to do. To my surprise, my grandfather lived for another year. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ TUESDAY, JUNE 16th, 2015 CONNECTORS although / though / even though - aunque; despite / in spite of - a pesar de Although, though and even though are used when the condition given is negative but the outcome/result is positive. Even though is stronger, more emphatic than although and though. The last one more informal than the others. Even though Ram hadn`t studied, he passed the exam. Although Ram hadn’t studied, he passed the exam. Though Ram hadn`t studied, he passed the exam. Despite/ In spite of: They are used to express the idea of contrast. In spite of + noun means almost the same as although + clause We went out in spite of the rain. (= ....although it was raining.) In spite of is the opposite of because of . She passed her exams in spite of her teacher. => (She had a bad teacher) She passed her exams because of her teacher. => (She had a good teacher).
