WHY COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS?

•    Preparation: the standards prepare students to be college-
     and career- ready upon completion of high school.
•    Competition: the standards are internationally
     benchmarked to help ensure our students are globally
     competitive.
•    Equity: Expectations are consistent for all – and not
     dependent on a student’s zip code.
•    Clarity: the standards are focused, coherent, and clear.
     Clearer standards help student (and parents and teachers)
     understand what is expected of them.
•    Collaboration: the standards permit unprecedented
     opportunities for collaboration across states and districts.

Clearer standards help student (and parents and teachers) understand what is expected of them. • Collaboration: the standards permit unprecedented opportunities for collaboration across states and districts.   1. This will help instructors to see the overall understanding of Indiana Academic Standards. Based on the results, in week 3, Indiana Academic Standards can be discussed more. Make sure to let them know that the resources probably won’t be there anymore or for too much longer. They need to log-into the Learning connection to see the resources. They will probably just need to think about what they would need in a potential resource to achieve this standard or learning goal.The Google form is item 3 on the website.

Note for AIs: - This Webex explainsthe CCSS: http://media.doe.in.gov/WebEx/curriculum/2012-01-10-PARCCCommonCore/index.html- We need to focus here on what is the difference between the state standards (Indiana Standards in our case) and the CCSS and why the CCSS is important; the rationale behind it (to achieve consistency and collaboration amongst States). Also it might be useful to share with them some info about its initiation date (2011-12) and the implementation schedule that extends to the academic year (2014-15). If you have time you can also create a new hands on activity that have the learners compare between the CCSS and Indiana Standards for each subject area of interest (check the “Key advances of the common core” slide in the webex for some ideas).
