Task 3 – An Info Hunt
Read the following excerpt
about the history of Samal.
The Municipality of Samal derived its
name from the Isamals who were its first
inhabitants. The Isamals were brought by
the first and second waves of migration
from the Malay Region of Southeast Asia,
dynastically ruled by a Datu up to the early
part of the American Regime.
The latest ruling tribal Chieftain was Datu
Taganiog who died on January 28, 1948.
Discovery revealed that the latter lived at
“Malibasa” (now known as Penaplata, the
poblacion) where he exercised his general
supervision. The word “Malibasa” meant
honorable. The Isamals lived in perfect
harmony as peace-loving people.
Questions to answer
1.What new information does the
text present you?
2.What about Samal history do you
want to know more of?
Task 4 – Exploring the English Language
Read the following sentences. For
every number, note the words
highlighted through boldface and
underscore. What relationships do
the words have?
1. Floating on this sea was a thing resembling a ball. This was
the abode of God the Most High.
2. Now at the time of the splitting of the ball, all creatures
have already been believed as being in it.
3. From the single light [Nur] was taken the elements that
became the moon, the sun, the stars, the trees, and all living
things. They were all there.
4. Nur was already risen. He then went around.
5. God wanted to bring out his creations.
6. Allah scattered his radiance.
7. The Man is here, but his joints are not connected.
Pronouns and Antecedents
Since you first learned to speak, you
have been using words such as I, you,
he, she, it , we, and they.
These words are called pronouns.
Read the two pairs of sentences
on the next slide and note the
changes in the second sentence of
each pair.
A. 1. Anton gave Via a greeting card.
2. He gave her a greeting card.
B. 1. “Will Via let John see the card?” John
asked.
2. “Will you let me see the card?” He asked.
Example A, number 1 uses three nouns.
Sentence 2 replaces two of them with
pronouns. He stands for Anton; and her
stands for Via. Both pronouns refer to other
person.
In example B, number 2 also replaces the
nouns with pronouns. Me replaces the noun
– John who is the speaker himself; and you
replaces the noun –Via who is the person
spoken to.
Thus, a pronoun is a word that is used in place
of a noun – person speaking, someone spoken
to, and other persons, places or things.
The noun for which a pronoun stands is its
antecedent.
Pronouns agree with their
antecedents in number (singular or
plural) and in gender (masculine,
feminine, neuter).
Singular and Plural Forms of Personal Pronouns
Form Singular Plural

Singular and Plural Forms of Personal Pronouns
Form Singular Plural
Possessive My, mine

Our, ours
Your, yours
Their, theirs
As shown in the table, personal
pronouns have three different forms
such as subject form, object form,
and possessive form.
The Subject Forms
The subject forms of personal pronouns are
used as subjects of the verb. They are also used
as predicate pronouns. A predicate pronoun is
a pronoun that follows a linking verb and is
linked by the verb to the subject.
Examples
Subjects Predicate Pronouns
You and I won. The winners were you
and I.
He spoke. The speaker was he.
Here are some points to remember about
predicate pronouns:
1. Predicate pronouns follow linking verbs such as
is, was, were, and will be.
2. The predicate pronoun usually means the same
thing as the subject .
3. A sentence with a predicate pronoun will usually
make sense if the subject and the predicate
pronoun are reversed.
The subject form of a pronoun for subjects and
predicate pronouns is always used.
Incorrect: His and me watched the concert.
Correct: He and I watched the concert.
Incorrect: One of the audience was him.
Correct: One of the audience was he.
Exercise 1
Read each sentence and underline the
correct form of pronoun or the subject
and predicate pronouns.
Do this in your notebook.
1. Bernard and (she, her) went to the mall.
2. The most excited ones to leave for the farm are
(we, us).
3. Miriam and (he, him) joined the tour.

8. Sven and (she, her) are good friends.
9. The persons in-charge of the contest are (we, us).
10. The leaders chosen by the teacher were (he,
him) and (I, me).
The object forms
The object forms of personal
pronouns are used as the direct or
indirect object or as the object of a
preposition.
Examples
Direct Object:
Mother loves me and her.
Indirect Object:
I gave her a birthday gift.
A compound object (either direct or indirect)
may consist of two or more pronouns, or a
noun and a pronoun, connected by and, or, or
nor. The object form of pronouns is used in all
compound objects.
Examples:
Direct object:
Imee asked Lea and me.
Vhie saw her and him.
Indirect Object:
I gave Carla and him a hand.
Alvie brought us and them food.
Exercise 2
Read each sentence and underline
the correct form of pronoun.
Do this in your notebook.
1.Karen invited Carol and (I, me).
2.I will give (she, her) a gift on her birthday.
3.Karie chose (he, him) as her escort.

8. He answered (they, them) evasively.
9. but, I have heard from Erika or (he, him) recently.
10. I’m sure you can manage it without help from
(she, her).
The possessive form
The possessive form of personal pronouns
is used as signal for ownership. They maybe
adjectives that modify nouns, and as
subjects, predicates, or objects of the
prepositions or verbs.
Examples:
Adjective: My bag is new.
Predicate: This bag is mine.
Subject: Yours is not new anymore.
Object of Preposition: The names list is in mine.
Object of the Verb: I like hers.

4. One of the judges did not like (you, yours).
5. (Us, Ours) is the only team that does not have
enough practice.

8. May I borrow (you, your) scanner?
9. (Us, Our) proposal has just been approved.
10. The gadgets that you need are in (me, mine).
There are some personal pronouns that are
combined for emphasis such as: myself, ourselves,
herself, themselves, yourself, yourselves, itself.
These are called compound pronouns.
Example:
The students themselves prepared their props.

8. Raul (yourself, himself) is the proponent of this project.
9. I don’t think if I (myself, herself) can find time for it.
10. We (ourselves, themselves) will arrange our schedule.
Some pronouns are called relative
pronouns. They are used as referents of
subjects or objects of the sentence. Who
and whom are both used to refer to
person; while, which or that are either used
to refer to object.
Example:
Miss Via Veto, who lived in England for
five years gave me postcards that show
the pride of the country.
Exercise 5

  • 18. Task 3 – An Info Hunt Read the following excerpt about the history of Samal.
  • 19. The Municipality of Samal derived its name from the Isamals who were its first inhabitants. The Isamals were brought by the first and second waves of migration from the Malay Region of Southeast Asia, dynastically ruled by a Datu up to the early part of the American Regime.
  • 20. The latest ruling tribal Chieftain was Datu Taganiog who died on January 28, 1948. Discovery revealed that the latter lived at “Malibasa” (now known as Penaplata, the poblacion) where he exercised his general supervision. The word “Malibasa” meant honorable. The Isamals lived in perfect harmony as peace-loving people.
  • 21. Questions to answer 1.What new information does the text present you? 2.What about Samal history do you want to know more of?
  • 22. Task 4 – Exploring the English Language Read the following sentences. For every number, note the words highlighted through boldface and underscore. What relationships do the words have?
  • 23. 1. Floating on this sea was a thing resembling a ball. This was the abode of God the Most High. 2. Now at the time of the splitting of the ball, all creatures have already been believed as being in it. 3. From the single light [Nur] was taken the elements that became the moon, the sun, the stars, the trees, and all living things. They were all there.
  • 24. 4. Nur was already risen. He then went around. 5. God wanted to bring out his creations. 6. Allah scattered his radiance. 7. The Man is here, but his joints are not connected.
  • 25. Pronouns and Antecedents Since you first learned to speak, you have been using words such as I, you, he, she, it , we, and they. These words are called pronouns.
  • 26. Read the two pairs of sentences on the next slide and note the changes in the second sentence of each pair.
  • 27. A. 1. Anton gave Via a greeting card. 2. He gave her a greeting card. B. 1. “Will Via let John see the card?” John asked. 2. “Will you let me see the card?” He asked.
  • 28. Example A, number 1 uses three nouns. Sentence 2 replaces two of them with pronouns. He stands for Anton; and her stands for Via. Both pronouns refer to other person.
  • 29. In example B, number 2 also replaces the nouns with pronouns. Me replaces the noun – John who is the speaker himself; and you replaces the noun –Via who is the person spoken to.
  • 30. Thus, a pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun – person speaking, someone spoken to, and other persons, places or things. The noun for which a pronoun stands is its antecedent.
  • 31. Pronouns agree with their antecedents in number (singular or plural) and in gender (masculine, feminine, neuter).
  • 32. Singular and Plural Forms of Personal Pronouns Form Singular Plural Subject I You He She It We You They Object Me You Him Her It us you them
  • 33. Singular and Plural Forms of Personal Pronouns Form Singular Plural Possessive My, mine You, yours His Her, hers Its Our, ours Your, yours Their, theirs
  • 34. As shown in the table, personal pronouns have three different forms such as subject form, object form, and possessive form.
  • 35. The Subject Forms The subject forms of personal pronouns are used as subjects of the verb. They are also used as predicate pronouns. A predicate pronoun is a pronoun that follows a linking verb and is linked by the verb to the subject.
  • 36. Examples Subjects Predicate Pronouns You and I won. The winners were you and I. He spoke. The speaker was he.
  • 37. Here are some points to remember about predicate pronouns: 1. Predicate pronouns follow linking verbs such as is, was, were, and will be. 2. The predicate pronoun usually means the same thing as the subject . 3. A sentence with a predicate pronoun will usually make sense if the subject and the predicate pronoun are reversed.
  • 38. The subject form of a pronoun for subjects and predicate pronouns is always used. Incorrect: His and me watched the concert. Correct: He and I watched the concert. Incorrect: One of the audience was him. Correct: One of the audience was he.
