Using Simple Sentences with Phrases as Modifiers and Complements
I. Learning Objective
Use simple sentences with phrases as modifiers and complements
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Using simple sentences with phrases as modifiers and
complements
B. References: PELC II 12
Fun in English-Reading IV, p. 95
C. Materials: selection and practice exercises on charts
III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Review through a game, “Choose Me.”
There will be flowers with stems in the vase. At the back of the flowers
are sentences. The teacher will call pupils one at a time to pick a
flower, read the sentence behind it and say what kind of sentence it is.
2. Motivation
Semantic Web
What comes to your mind when you hear or read about Jose Rizal?
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Value Focus: Helpfulness
Jose Rizal
Jose Rizal grew up in a small town of Calamba, Laguna. He
played with other boys and girls in the town. One day a little
boy’s kite got caught in the bell tower. Jose Rizal got the kite. He
gave it to the little boy. The little boy thanked Jose Rizal.
2. Comprehension check-up
- Who grew up in the small town of Calamba, Laguna?
- What did he do with other children?
- What happened to a boy’s kite?
- What did Jose do?
- What did the little boy do?
3. Analysis and Discussion
Let us read again the sentences in the paragraph. You’ll noticed
that there is a word that is more important than the others.
Ex. A little boy’s kite got caught in the bell tower.
What is the complete subject? (A little boy’s kite)
What is the simple subject? (kite)
What word in the complete subject gives a complete
picture of the simple subject kite? (a little boy’s)
(These words are called modifiers.)
In the same sentence, what is the simple predicate?
(got caught)
What other words are with the predicate?
(These words are complements.)
What are the modifiers and compliments in other
sentences?
4. Skill Development
Read these sentences. Box the simple subject, circle the simple
predicate, underline the modifier once and the complement twice.
Example:
Tall grasses grow in the garden.
1. The intelligent boy went to school early this morning.
2. His thoughtful mother bought him a new pair of shoes.
3. The noisy children stayed in the room.
4. The concerned pupil submitted his project on time.
5. A radiant smile shone on everyone’s faces.
This time, you are going to make your own sentences with
modifiers and complements.
5. Values integration
What good trait did Jose show? Are you like Jose? In what way?
6. Generalization
How can we make sentences more colorful and interesting?
(Sentences can be more interesting and colorful if we add modifiers to
the subject and complements to the simple predicate.)
C. Post Activities
1. Application
a. Group Activity
Make these sentences colorful and interesting by giving the
appropriate modifiers and complements.
a. __________ baby cries __________.
b. __________ children play __________.
c. __________ boys assembled __________.
d. __________ sister played ____________.
e. __________ teacher attended __________.
f. __________ children eat __________.
g. __________ friends played __________.

b. Optional: ICT Material
“The Farm Animals: By Rolando Merino
http://magickeys: com/book/short stories for kids
