FEATURES
Supra-segmental Features
 The features that are over and above the
segmental values
 The characteristics of supra-segmental of
speech: speech sounds may also have length,
pitch (intonation and tone), and stress.
Supra-segmental Features

 Refers to the duration of a speech sound
 Indicated by the use of an IPA style colon [:]
 When a vowel is prolonged, it can make a
difference between words.

Japanese:
Biru [biru] with a regular i means “building’
Biru [bi:ru] with double in length means “beer”
Saki [saki] means “ahead”
Saki [sak:i] means “before’

Intonation
 The pattern of rises and falls in pitch across a
stretch of speech such as a sentence.
 The pitch = highness or lowness
 The meaning of sentence can depend on the
sentence’s intonation contour.

 With respect to the syllables in a word the
pitch can make a different in the word’s
meaning
 The languages that include tone as one of the
factors affecting meanings are called
tone/tonal languages

Mandarin:
Ma [mǎ] means “hemp’
Ma [mâ] means ‘scold’
Supra-segmental Features
Stress
 It is a property of syllables, not individual segments. A
stressed syllable is more prominent or easily identified
than unstressed
 Stressed syllables are prominence due to
 A number of physical effort in production,
 Greater loudness
 Increased duration
