Rainwater harvesting and its uses
1. RAINWATER HARVESTING AND ITS USES
We know that water is the most precious resource on this earth. We need it in order
to survive, so it is our responsibility to conserve it and use it wisely. This can be
done by keeping an eye on the activities that lead to wastage of water. Awareness
should be made regarding the collection and storage of water for future use.
Reusing water
A rainwater harvesting system is the best way to collect and store water.
Rainwater harvesting is a process in which rainwater is collected from roof tops and
is transferred to different types of storage tanks or containers. The purpose of
rainwater harvesting is basically to reuse the water that comes from nature. This
water can be used for various useful purposes such as watering plants and gardens,
washing cars, cleaning windows, etc. Water harvesting has proven to be a blessing
to people living in areas where there is no water supply or areas that have to deal
with water shortage on a regular basis.
In many places in the world buildings have been designed in such a way that water
coming from rooftops can be collected
Some people doubt if water harvesting is useful or whether they should invest in it.
However, rainwater harvesting is a great way to preserve water. Anything that is
done to preserve natural resources like water are worth investing in.
2. Rainwater harvesting has many benefits. We have listed the most
important ones below:
Saving money – every month you have to pay your water bill alongside many
other bills. Water is used in a large quantity and for various purposes in every
household. Think of drinking, bathing, cooking, washing clothes and vehicles,
etc. But there are many tasks that do not require water that’s completely
clean, like washing cars and bikes and cleaning floors and windows. Water
collected through rainwater harvesting can be used for these purposes. This
will ultimately reduce your monthly water bill.
Conserving water – According to a recent survey, the average daily water
usage per person is 10 to 15 liters. Although 75% of earth is made of water,
only 1% is useful as the rest of the water is salty. Using rainwater for some of
our home activities can help in conserving water.
Reducing the chances of floods – heavy rains lead to floods. The main reason
is that heavy rains cause soil erosion which results in floods.
Easy to maintain – rainwater harvesting systems require little
maintenance. As with any appliances, regular basic maintenance
ensures optimum performance, and increases the lifespan of the
system.
Useful for plants – rainwater can be used to water plants and lawns around
the house. The best thing about rainwater is that it is available free of charge
and that it is a natural resource. Storing it is also very cost-effective. It is very
simple process to collect water through a water harvesting system.
What do you think? Could rainwater harvesting work for you?
