In Docker, applications are shipped using a lightweight format, managed with a high-level API, and run within software containers which abstract the host environment. Operating details like distributions, versions, and network setup no longer matter to the application developer. Thanks to this abstraction level, we can use the same container across all steps of the life cycle of an application, from development to production. This eliminates problems stemming from discrepancies between those environments. Even so, these environments will always have different requirements. If our quality assurance (QA) and production systems use different logging systems, how can we still ship the same container to both? How can we satisfy the backup and security requirements of our production stack without bloating our development stack? In this sess, you will learn about the unique features in containers that allow you to cleanly decouple system administrator tasks from the core of your application. We’ll show you how this decoupling results in smaller, simpler containers, and gives you more flexibility when building, managing, and evolving your application stacks.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Jenkins Users

"Never upgrade a server again. Never update your code. Instead, create new servers, and throw away the old ones!" That's the idea of immutable servers, or immutable infrastructure. This makes many things easier: rollbacks (you can always bring back the old servers), A/B testing (put old and new servers side by side), security (use the latest and safest base system at each deploy), and more. However, throwing in a bunch of new servers at each one-line CSS change is going to be complicated, not to mention costly. Containers to the rescue! Creating container "golden images" is easy, fast, dare I say painless. Replacing your old containers with new ones is also easy to do; much easier than virtual machines, let alone physical ones. In this talk, we'll quickly recap the pros (and cons) of immutable servers; then explain how to implement that pattern with containers. We will use Docker as an example, but the technique can easily be adapted to Rocket or even plain LXC containers.

Presented at: https://apacheconeu2016.sched.org/event/8ULR n 2014, a few Jenkins hackers set out to implement a new way of defining continuous delivery pipelines in Jenkins. Dissatisfied with chaining jobs together, configured in the web UI, the effort started with Apache Groovy as the foundation and grew from there. Today the result of that effort, named Jenkins Pipeline, supports a rich DSL with "steps" provided by a Jenkins plugins, built-in auto-generated documentation, and execution resumability which allow Pipelines to continue executing while the master is offline. In this talk we'll take a peek behind the scenes of Jenkins Pipeline. Touring the various constraints we started with, whether imposed by Jenkins or Groovy, and discussing which features of Groovy were brought to bear during the implementation. If you're embedding, extending or are simply interested in the internals of Groovy this talk should have plenty of food for thought.

In normal project work everybody will have heard the sentence: „On my local machine it worked“! The circumstances which lead to this statement are that there are usually minor inconsistencies within the setup of the different environments. Different operating systems, Java versions or installed hot fixes influent the behavior of the developed application and cause issues. This is where Docker comes in place. Docker automates the deployment of applications and isolates them inside software containers, by providing an additional layer of abstraction and automation but with out the overhead caused by a virtual machine. Ones set up, it limits the installation process to 5 minutes independent which environment. Furthermore, the same application can be reused to run on local machines, data centers or in the cloud. We will show you how we incorporated Docker in our continuous deployment process and how we facilitate it for our development and deployment chain.

The Jenkins open source continuous integration server now provides a “pipeline” scripting language which can define jobs that persist across server restarts, can be stored in a source code repository and can be versioned with the source code they are building. By defining the build and deployment pipeline in source code, teams can take full control of their build and deployment steps. The Docker project provides lightweight containers and a system for defining and managing those containers. The Jenkins pipeline and Docker containers are a great combination to improve the portability, reliability, and consistency of your build process. This session will demonstrate Jenkins and Docker in the journey from continuous integration to DevOps.
