OUR SAVIOR THE SERVANT

The name “Jesus” by all accounts has to be one of (if not) the most
recognized names on the planet. Even those who disbelieve in His deity have to
confess that this one “man” has changed the lives of countless millions, and He
continues to do so even today. That being said, what do we know about Jesus? Who
is He to you and to me? To some, Jesus was a mere teacher (rabbi) who lived some
two thousand years ago. To others, Jesus was a prophet who did wonders among the
Jews. In fact, Jesus asked His disciples, “who do men say that I the Son of man
am?” (Matthew 16:13). The disciples made it clear that there was a lot of division
among the people. “And they said, some say that Thou art John the Baptist: some,
Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets” (Matthew 16:14). Jesus then
went to the heart of the matter when He asked, “But whom say YE (emph. mine
BK) that I am?” (Matthew 16:14). Peter’s reply was one of certainty. He did not
have to stop and think, he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt who Jesus really was.
“Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).
There are many characteristics of Christ that can be discussed, debated (by
some), and discerned, but the characteristic of servant has to be the most fascinating
to consider. John reminds his readers how that, “In the beginning the WORD was
with God and the WORD WAS GOD” (John 1:1). Context bears this WORD to be
none other than the second person of the Godhead, Jesus the Christ (John 1:14 cf.
Colossians 2:8, 9). Just think the Creator of all things (John 1:2-5) willingly
“became” a servant. He chose to live the life of a servant before the foundation of
the world. The inspired apostle Paul put it this way to the church in Philippi:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
But MADE HIMSELF (emph. mine BK) of no reputation, and took upon
him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being
found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto
death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2:6-8).
Thayer, the Greek scholar, defined the word “κενόω/kenoo” (translated MADE
KJV) as “1) to empty, make empty.” Also, “1a) of Christ, He laid aside equality
with or the form of God” (Thayer’s Greek Definitions). Wow! Imagine what love it
takes to serve another to this magnitude. Taking the time to study and consider that
Jesus did this for you and me should make us take a long hard look at what we have,
or have not, given up for Him. Understanding Jesus as the Savior is much easier on
the mind than seeing Him as a servant.

Our King of Kings, and Lord of Lords took
upon Himself the form of a servant (Philippians 2:7;
Revelation 17:14; 19:16). Even the men whom
Jesus chose to be His apostles had difficulty
understanding this truth; therefore, Jesus made them
understand by performing an unimaginable deed,
that only a true servant would consider. “He riseth
from supper and laid aside his garments; and took a
towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth
water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples'
feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he
was girded” (John 13:4, 5). Peter as not about to
let the Lord wash his feet. This was a job for a
“servant” not a king (John 13:8a). The reply Jesus
gave to Peter would have sent chills down his spine.
“If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with Me”
(John 13:8b). Peter said, “Lord, not my feet only,
but also my hands and my head” (John 13:9). Peter
missed the point. It is not about washing off the dirt,
but a lesson on servitude. “For I have given you an
example, that ye should do as I have done to you”
(John 13:15). In a rebuke against the scribes and
Pharisee’s desire of the “chief seats” Jesus said,
“But he that is greatest among you shall be your
servant” (Matthew 23:11).
Jesus left us an example that we should
follow in His footsteps (1Peter 2:21). Are we
following His example as a servant? What a better
world this would be if we all were willing to serve
one another.
