The article discusses the difference between being a biological father and being a "daddy." It notes that many fathers provide for their children's physical needs but fail to spend quality time with them through activities like play. While toys and money are fleeting, the memories created from quality time spent together last a lifetime. The article encourages men to go beyond just being fathers and to become true "daddies" by providing love, wisdom and joyful attitudes, not just necessities, in order to have a positive influence on their children.

FROM FATHER TO DADDY
Barry Kennedy
The summer heat is quickly approaching. Many children are right in the middle of
this year’s summer ball season. Parents are frantically running around in such a pace that no
seasoned Olympic runner could dare match. We often meet ourselves coming or going, but
never seem to be still. With all the practices, work, and church activities, we find ourselves
always in the fast lane of life. Why? We love our children and want them to be happy.
Often, in the heat of all this running around, we find ourselves stressed and wondering if it
is really worth all of the effort. Sadly, many “fathers” have decided that this is not the life
they dreamed it would be and, in turn, decide that the grass may be greener on the other
side. It is at this point that he becomes nothing more than a biological father and ceases
being a true “DADDY.”
I know that the words father and daddy can have the same definition, and some may
switch them to say that father is the better term. Either way, we all know there is a
difference in one who brings life into this world and one who brings this world a good life.
God’s wisdom is shown in the establishment of the home. Yes, long before the “gay rights”
movement tried to redefine the home, God perfected it by establishing one man with one
woman, and that was to be for life. Jesus said it this way, “Have ye not read, that he which
made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a
man (Single Male) leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife (Single Woman):
and they twain (two) shall be one flesh. Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh.
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matt. 19:4-6). What
exactly are we, as fathers, providing for our children? Fun and recreation, food and shelter,
and what about knowledge and wisdom? No one can deny that there has been a breakdown
in the home. We need to be thankful for those fathers who take seriously the responsibility
that comes with being a parent. God set up the home to have a man serving as the provider,
“But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath
denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel” (1 Tim. 5:8). Of course, parents must provide
for the physical needs of their children, but sadly, some take on the role of father and never
choose to be a “daddy.” Those of you who are fathers, think back to the first time you heard
your child say, “da da.” It was not long until that “da, da,” turned into daddy. Can you
imagine a two or three-year-old saying “father?” When the children are little we provided
for their physical needs, but also provide play time. Nothing says I love you to a child
better than playing with them. They cherish those moments. Think back, do we remember
(or did we ever care) how much money our dads made? More often than not, we remember
the time that they spent with us more than the money they spent on us. Toys break and get

lost, clothes are out grown, but memories last a lifetime. I
still remember talking with my grandfather (papaw) not
long before he passed from this life. He could still very
vividly recall memories of his childhood, even though he
might not have been able to tell you what happened just
thirty minutes earlier. I want my children to cherish their
childhood memories as well.
Fathers will always be needed in society.
However, is it not true that we need more men who are
willing to be “DADDIES?” Men who not only provide
the necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and most
importantly God’s Word (Ephesians 6:4), but also men
who are providing love, character, and an attitude of joy
in and for life. It is to those daddies that we proudly say,
“HAPPY FATHERS DAY!” May we all strive to go
from being just “fathers” to becoming true “daddies” and
give God the glory. Let’s shine our Christian lights
through our Christian homes by becoming more godly,
“DADDIES.”
