Best paper nominee, presented at Ubicomp 2014 Authors: Jacky Bourgeois, Janet van der Linden, Gerd Kortuem, Blaine A. Price and Christopher Rimmer Contact: jacky.bourgeois AT open.ac.uk Abstract: Domestic microgeneration is the onsite generation of low- and zero-carbon heat and electricity by private households to meet their own needs. In this paper we explore how an everyday household routine – that of doing laundry – can be augmented by digital technologies to help households with photovoltaic solar energy generation to make better use of self-generated energy. This paper presents an 8-month in-the-wild study that involved 18 UK households in longitudinal energy data collection, prototype deployment and participatory data analysis. Through a series of technology interventions mixing energy feedback, proactive suggestions and direct control the study uncovered opportunities, potential rewards and barriers for families to shift energy consuming household activities and highlights how digital technology can act as mediator between household laundry routines and energy demand-shifting behaviors. Finally, the study provides insights into how a “smart” energy-aware washing machine shapes organization of domestic life and how people “communicate” with their washing machine.

There needs to be a radical difference in the way we use energy if we are expecting a sustainable future. Operational Technology's increasing collaboration with Information Technology creates hope to bring about this transformation. Another development that will add to this change is the Internet of Things (IoT). Both these advancements have helped in inventing analytics-driven and customized energy saving solutions. With the smart technology, the demand and consumption of energy are automatically monitored and controlled. When automation and energy are backed by software and analytics, it takes operational efficiency to another level. Enterprises around the world need to be backed up with strong energy management services by forming a robust ecosystem of partners. Governments must support enterprise-wide energy operations with sustainable energy solutions. Organizations working towards building up analytical models to make efficient energy saving solutions must be encouraged. Only then will the overall carbon footprint and energy wastage reduce and the energy losses that have occurred till now could be recovered.

Julia McDonald Off the beaten path: rural energy & remoteness Far-flung islands in the South Pacific and treacherous terrain in the Himalayas: both pose enormous challenges for rural development and energy. In this webinar, we’ll gather experts who will tell stories about their experiences working in remote areas where energy access is limited or almost non-existent – and what they are doing to promote access. What common challenges have they faced, and what solutions are they finding for energy in remote areas? How can these remote, “last mile” villages become places where people have full access to education, health, technology, and livelihoods? What can policymakers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and civil society do to make this a reality? Our webinar series is a little different: each expert will speak for less than 10 minutes and will focus on their on-the-ground experience using photos to tell their story. http://e4sv.org/events/off-beaten-path-rural-energy-remoteness/

From Simon Batchelor “Failure” – the word usually carries a negative connotation. But for entrepreneurs, policymakers, and NGOs working to provide energy access to people in the “last mile”, failure can actually provide important lessons. Is failure an important ingredient to success? In this webinar, we’ll gather experts who will talk openly about their experiences with failure from a variety of angles and why failure is actually an important element in successfully delivering energy access to remote communities. What have they learned from these so-called “failures”? Must one fail to succeed? Most importantly, how can these stories of failure (and success) help remote villages to access energy, education, healthcare, etc.? Our webinar series is a little different: each expert will speak for less than 10 minutes and will focus on their on-the-ground experience using photos to tell their story.
