2. Wieliczka salt mine
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is the oldest
and largest salt mine in Europe. It
was founded in the 13th century and
its exploitation continues to this day.
The mine has about 300 kilometers
of galleries, shafts and rooms where
you can admire sandstone caves and
sculptures that decorate the rooms.

Throughout its history, many
people have worked at the Salt
Mine including miners who
extracted salt from deep within
underground tunnels as well as
craftsmen who produced objects
out of blocks cut from solid rock
salt found within these tunnels.

5. Chamber Janowice
The chamber was built in the 17th century.
Inside, there are sculptures illustrating the
Polish legend about the origin of the salt
deposit near Kraków. Wieliczka was opened
during the reign of Prince Bolesław the Chaste
and his wife Saint Kinga. According to the
legend, before Kinga came from Hungary to the
capital of Poland, she wanted to give her new
homeland a special gift. Upon learning that rock
salt was not mined in Poland, she asked her
father, King Bela IV, for one of the Hungarian
salt mines. The king acceded to his daughter's
request.
6. Chamber Sielec
In this chamber there
are reconstructed
devices used for
transporting salt, e.g.
carts and sleighs.
7. Chamber Wessla
The Wieliczka Salt Mine also serves as a sanatorium, the minimal
climate in the mine is particularly recommended when ensuring the
upper respiratory tract, asthma and allergies. In 1997, in the Teodor
Wessel chamber on level III , a separate Underground
Rehabilitation and Treatment Center was opened. By supporting
active treatment in it, patients, inhaling air rich in sodium, calcium
and magnesium chloride, effectively eliminate some diseases of
civilization.
