1. Finding Keywords
Your Customers Use
For starters, know what your ideal
customers might be looking for and
what words they would use in order
to find your website. To do this,
check out your target market, look
at any comments, emails, and
feedback they leave, and make a
list of possible keywords. These
words become a master list.
From there, enter all of the keywords you have come up with into Google’s Adwords
Keyword Tool and then pick out the ones with the best amount of searches. I also do
something a little different.
Then you should use Google’s Search-Based Keyword Tool which will enable you to pick
up any extra words and phrases.
The next thing you will need to do is to determine which words are the most
competitive, how competitive they are, and which ones are worth focusing on. For
each of the most promising words, do an exact phrase search using quotes and keep
track of the amount of results that turn up for each. Look at the first couple of pages of
the results and keep track of what they are, how much power they each have, and
what type of links each of them have. Then make a list of the top keywords to target.
Last but not least, learn exactly how much competition there might be for a particular
phrase. Go through the list and put a value and cut out any words you believe are
simply of no value.
By now you should have fairly good amount of keywords and phrases that you feel
would be worth targeting from an SEO standpoint. You should now put your keywords
into different categories.
Keywords that will bring searchers who are looking for the exact products and services
you offer.
Keywords that will bring in links, improve your image, share information, and help
demonstrate your abilities.
