1. Are You Micro-Managing Yourself?
Some people have the mindset that if they do not do it
themselves then it will not get done right and they are
constantly afraid to let go of operational details which limit
them from being able to be creative on a higher level.
Many successful entrepreneurs can be classified as “highly
creative control freaks.” It is easy to understand this because
in order to be successful in a new business you have to be
strong in order to make something out of nothing.
A new business is a lot like your children. You will do anything
to protect them and nurture them until they grow up and can be on their own. People with a new
business feel the same way about that business and will do whatever it takes to protect it and nurture it
to success.
For a new business to be a success in today’s world, it takes tremendous determination and focus, as
well as a certain lack of sensitivity to others. However, if this is overdone and micro-managed too much,
it can be their undoing.
In order to prevent the strangulation of micro-management and continue in your visionary capacity to
grow and expand, you must totally trust your team and their systems as well as yourself.
It is your business yes, but you hired your employees for a reason, trust them and let them do what you
hired them to do. Empower them to feel important and let them get the feeling that are an intricate cog
within your business and they will not let you down.
If you continue to do everything yourself and micro-manage both yourself and them, they will never grow
or perform the way that you always hoped they would. If you show them respect for their abilities, then
they will show you respect and give it their all on a daily basis and help your business grow.
Just remember that it takes time, be open to questions and let them know that no question is a dumb
question. If they feel comfortable coming to you when they are unsure of something and you can explain
it to them without looking down upon them or making them feel stupid, they will have no need to ask
again and will perform the way you want them to.
Remember that a new driver will not be smooth and will be rather jerky behind the wheel at first, but as
time goes on, they are just as competent as the next guy on the road. Empower them by extending their
horizons and they will cruise at a higher level.
If you continue to not trust your employees and do everything yourself or are constantly looking over
their shoulders, they will never feel respected or that you have the confidence in them to do the job you
hired them for. Eventually, you will feel overwhelmed, and like you are close to losing control.

2. Entrepreneurs need to break out of their comfort zone of
operational control and let go by getting good people in the
right places, holding them accountable and monitoring them
appropriately, but not too much.
If you try to keep too many things in your head and oversee
every single aspect of your business, you will lose objectivity
and less important things will bother you more than they
should. You will not be giving the tactical and strategic
operations of the business the objective attention it deserves.
The trick is to let your employees do their jobs, show them
respect, empower them to do more important tasks and to be
able to let go, and trust that things are being handled by other
people and that they are doing just as good a job as you
would.
Then you are truly free to be thinking about more important things and not every little thing, and you
business will flourish and reward you for it.
