1. Unit ASSURE
A Analyze the learners
I will be teaching public high school students grades 9-12, in the setting of a music
appreciation class. The class shows a homogenous demographic of middle class, locally born
students. There is an equal mix of boys and girls. Most express an audio or visual based
learning style, and have responded well to research and reflection based assignments.
S State Objectives
Exploring
The student, with
precision and selfdirection, critically
analyzes music. The
student insightfully
describes and
evaluates music and
music performances.
Relating
The student explains,
evaluates and makes
inferences about the
relationships between
music, global cultures,
the other arts and
disciplines. The
student’s observations
demonstrate critical
thinking and are wellreasoned and
insightful.
Appraisal
The Student shows
mastery of the context
and content of
musical works, by
active listening,
critical reviewing, and
relating their
assessment of a piece
of music.
Unit Objective
High school students, grades 9-12, will explore, make relations to, and appraise works of
opera. They will learn to do these things through exposure, research, discussion, and
presentation. The students will accomplish this with 100% accuracy in one week.

U Utilize Media and Materials
The materials listed above will be applied in a series of lessons for one week. Daily
assignments will be assessed for completion and content mastery. The week will end with a day
of presentations through Voki avatars. These individual presentations will be used to assess the
progress of individual students and the effectiveness of the lesson.
R Require Learner Participation
Students will consistently be required to apply themselves through self-directed learning.
This unit relies on the 21st century pillar of project based learning. This will require students to
actively participate in assignments and communicate with their classmates.
E Evaluate and Revise
The final presentations will be the key to gauging the efficacy of the lessons in the unit. I
will assess students individually to keep track of their personal progress. I will take note of the
3. entire class’s progress both daily and finally on Friday. This last assessment will show whether
the unit was an overall success or failure.
