Cleft lip and palate is the second most common congenital deformity affecting approximately 1 in 750 births. It can cause problems with appearance, speech, dental issues, and emotional impacts. There are two types of clefts - primary palate which forms early in gestation and includes the incisor teeth, and secondary palate which forms later and includes the soft palate. Clefts can be caused by genetic and environmental factors. The goals of treatment are to improve appearance, speech, dental function, and patient self-image through surgery and other interventions.
