2. • Good dental hygiene is essential for the overall health of the
teeth.
• But while undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is even more
vital.
• That's because the braces, Invisalign aligners, and other
orthodontic appliances you wear during treatment create
nooks and crannies that can trap food and create perfect
hiding spots for bacteria and plaque, spelling bad news for
teeth.
3. Plaque is the Problem!
• So what's so bad about plaque? When the bacteria living in
your mouth harden into plaque, they interact with bits of food
in your mouth to create corrosive acids that eat away at tooth
enamel.
• If left unchecked, this can erode the enamel away completely
and create a cavity.
• Controlling plaque and bacteria through diligent, regular oral
hygiene is an important part of ensuring successful
orthodontic treatment.
• Plaque can also make the teeth look yellow. To avoid plaque
to be deposited on the teeth make sure to brush your teeth 2-

4. Importance of Diet
• The first step of proper oral hygiene is your diet. Just as
certain foods are good and bad for your body, certain foods
are good or bad for your teeth!
• Most of us are well aware that sugary foods and drinks can
lead to tooth decay.
• When wearing braces, it's critical to avoid any foods that are
hard, sticky, or loaded with sugar.
• Hard foods have the potential to break brackets, while sticky
foods can get trapped under archwires and in braces.
• Sugary foods combine with bacteria in your mouth to produce
the acids that are responsible for cavities and decay.
5. • Saliva is your body’s natural defense against tooth decay.
• You need to give saliva plenty of time to wash away acids that
form after eating and drinking.
• A good rule to follow is to limit eating times each day to 3
meals and 2 snack times.
• You can drink plenty of water as often as you like! Be aware
that bottled water may not contain fluoride.
• There are certain foods that can loosen, break or bend wires
and bands when you are wearing braces.
• Avoid hard foods such as nuts and hard biscuits.
• Foods such as apples and carrots should be grated or chopped
into small pieces before eating to reduce the stress on your
braces
6. • Avoid sticky foods such as caramels, toffees, muesli or fruit
bars.
• No chewing gum!
• Additionally, you'll want to avoid chewing on anything like ice,
pencils, or nails, as these habits can cause damage to your
appliances or even chip your teeth.
• Remember that damaged braces mean extra appointments,
inconvenience and extended treatment time.

8. How often is Dental Cleaning Required?
• One should visit your dentist for regular dental examination
and thorough cleanings every six months, or twice a year,
regardless of whether or not you have braces.

• Some patients benefit from visiting their dentist twice as
often, or about every three months, while wearing braces.
9. At Home Care
• Good oral care isn’t just about making your teeth look pretty –
it is also the key to avoiding common dental problems like
gingivitis, tartar, and demineralization.

much harder to keep your teeth clean with braces as brackets
and wires trap food.
• Get into the habit of carrying a travel toothbrush, toothpaste
and floss with you so that you can clean up your smile after
every meal.
• At the very least, rinse your mouth well after eating, if you are
unable to brush and floss. You will also notice that your
toothbrush will wear out faster because of your appliances, so
be sure to replace it whenever the bristles start to fray.

11. Brushing Your Teeth in 6 easy steps
Follow these 6 steps, and you’ll be well on the way to a beautiful,
healthy smile. Remember to use fluoride toothpaste and a
soft-bristled toothbrush.
1. Start brushing where the tooth crown meets the gum
surface. Hold your toothbrush so the bristles are at a 45-
degree angle with the gumline, and brush in a circular
motion, working your way around your mouth from one side
to the other. Spend about 10 seconds brushing each tooth.
It’s best to have a regular brushing routine – e.g. starting at
the upper right side of your mouth, and finishing on the
lower left side.
12. 2. Brush the brackets on your teeth one by one. Spend about 10
seconds brushing each bracket in a circular motion until you
have cleaned every one of your teeth.
3. Clean under your archwires. Tilt your toothbrush so the
bristles can get into the area between your braces.
4. Brush the chewing surface of all your teeth.
5. Brush the inside surfaces of all the teeth.
6. Rinse your mouth, and check your teeth in the mirror. Your
braces and teeth should be clean and shiny.

14. • To floss, you'll need the help of a special device called a floss
threader.
• This is essentially a plastic loop with a long, pointed end.
• To use it, thread the floss through the eye of the loop, then
thread the pointed end under your archwire.
• Pull it through so that the floss is run under the archwire,
then floss normally.
• Repeat this process for every space between the teeth.

16. Cleaning Removable Appliances
• If you're wearing a retainer or Invisalign aligner, you should
brush it every time you take it out or put it back in.
• You can also soak it in a glass of tap water with a denture
cleaning tablet once per day.
• Don’t use hot water as it may distort the shape of your
retainer.
• When you're not wearing the appliance, make sure to keep it
in its case - these both protect the appliance and helps
prevent you from losing it.
17. Additional oral health care
• Disclosing tablets:
Disclosing Tablets are a great product to help monitor plaque
removal. Brush your teeth following the simple 6 step process
and then chew on one tablet. Swish saliva around the mouth
for 30 seconds. Spit out and then rinse gently with water.
Examine your teeth in good light. Any food debris, bacterial
plaque and poorly cleaned areas will color bright pink. Brush
thoroughly to remove colored area.
18. • Interdental brushes:
Interdental brushes are small cylindrical brushes designed to
slide into and clean the spaces between the teeth and braces.
They have lateral bristles that spring out to engage and
remove the plaque in the small hard to reach areas in
between the archwire and braces.
• Dental Flosser:
Flossing is important for gum tissue and tooth health. We know
it is difficult to floss with braces on, so try flossing in the
evening when you have more time. Using aids such as a
dental flosser can be very helpful.
19. • Mouth rinse:
An oral rinse (mouth rinse or mouthwash) is a liquid solution
that you swish around your entire mouth – teeth, gums and
tongue – to help promote oral hygiene, reduce oral
discomfort, provide moisture to oral tissues or help with bad
breath. For best results, use daily (preferably after you have
brushed your teeth at night).
