Handling the Media
• As a doctor, dealing with media can be both
exciting and challenging. Here are some
guidelines that can help doctors handle
media in an ethical and effective manner:
1. Know the media landscape: It is important to understand
the different types of media and their target audience, as
well as their tone, style, and mission. This can help you
tailor your message to the specific outlet you are dealing
with.
2. Be prepared: If you are approached by a reporter, it is
important to be prepared to answer questions in a clear
and concise manner. Rehearse your responses to
commonly asked questions, and know your key messages.
Handling the Media
3. Protect patient confidentiality: When speaking with the
media, it is important to maintain patient confidentiality
and respect their privacy. Do not disclose any information
that could be used to identify a patient, unless you have
obtained their explicit consent.
4. Be accurate and honest: Provide accurate and up-to-date
information to the media, and do not make claims that you
cannot support with evidence. If you do not know the
answer to a question, it is okay to say so.
5. Avoid conflicts of interest: Be aware of potential conflicts
of interest, such as financial ties to pharmaceutical
companies or other organizations. Disclose these conflicts
to the media and avoid commenting on topics in which
you have a vested interest.
Handling the Media
6. Know when to say no: It is important to know when to
decline media requests, particularly if you are not
comfortable with the topic or the manner in which it is
being presented. You have the right to decline an
interview if you feel it would be detrimental to your
patient, yourself, or your profession.
7. We should use media for educating general public about
matters of health and disease.
By following these guidelines, doctors can effectively handle
media and maintain their professional integrity, while helping
to advance public understanding of health and medical issues.

  • 22. Handling the Media • As a doctor, dealing with media can be both exciting and challenging. Here are some guidelines that can help doctors handle media in an ethical and effective manner: 1. Know the media landscape: It is important to understand the different types of media and their target audience, as well as their tone, style, and mission. This can help you tailor your message to the specific outlet you are dealing with. 2. Be prepared: If you are approached by a reporter, it is important to be prepared to answer questions in a clear and concise manner. Rehearse your responses to commonly asked questions, and know your key messages.
  • 23. Handling the Media 3. Protect patient confidentiality: When speaking with the media, it is important to maintain patient confidentiality and respect their privacy. Do not disclose any information that could be used to identify a patient, unless you have obtained their explicit consent. 4. Be accurate and honest: Provide accurate and up-to-date information to the media, and do not make claims that you cannot support with evidence. If you do not know the answer to a question, it is okay to say so. 5. Avoid conflicts of interest: Be aware of potential conflicts of interest, such as financial ties to pharmaceutical companies or other organizations. Disclose these conflicts to the media and avoid commenting on topics in which you have a vested interest.
  • 24. Handling the Media 6. Know when to say no: It is important to know when to decline media requests, particularly if you are not comfortable with the topic or the manner in which it is being presented. You have the right to decline an interview if you feel it would be detrimental to your patient, yourself, or your profession. 7. We should use media for educating general public about matters of health and disease. By following these guidelines, doctors can effectively handle media and maintain their professional integrity, while helping to advance public understanding of health and medical issues.
