There is something disquieting to me that the very technique that Stalin used to place himself next to Lenin when he wasn’t in fact, there, was later used by McCarthyites to frame an honorable man, accusing him of being a secret Communist. It was a dark day for democracy. The former Communist is Earl Browder, expelled from the American Communist Party in 1946, after he took the position that Communism and Capitalism could peacefully coexist.
