1. About Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha:
The ‘Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha, Kolhapur’ is one of the few renowned and leading
educational institutions in Maharashtra (India). Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe started his dream project of
founding an educational institute in 1954. Revered Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe took up the task of the
spread of education with the definite objectives in mind. His objective was to transform a person
not only into a acknowledgeable or learned but into a wise, civilized and refined human being. The
Sanstha registered with charity Commissioner under Public Trust Act. This educational concern
has attained the growth to the tune of 22 undergraduate colleges, 66 higher secondary schools,
170 secondary schools and 72 other educational units. In addition to this, over 2500 students
pass out as graduates from different streams every year.
The annual budget of this second largest education Sanstha in Maharashtra is Rs. 4,00000000/-
(rupees four hundred million). The total number of students taking instructions at various levels in
a variety of programmes is estimated to be 2 lacs and about 7500 teachers have been discharging
their pious duty to materialize the dream of late Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe.
2. Kolhapur travel guide:
2.01 Kolhapur is a city situated in the south west corner of Maharashtra, India near to Karnataka
border. From Belgaum it is just one and half hour journey and Pune is 4 hours journey from here
by road. Shri Swamu Sikshan Sanstha situated at the centre of the city, Tarabai Park. The
population of Kolhapur is around 7, 20,000. The main languages are Hindi, Marathi and English. It
is situated on the banks of river Panchganga and provides the location for the Mahalakshmi
Temple. The city also lends its name to many common terms like Kolhapuri Chappal , Kolhapuri
lavangi mirchi, Kolhapuri gur and Kolhapuri cuisine.
2.02 Kolhapur is a very ancient city, famous for its food, education, headwear, footwear,
jewellery, wrestling and religious connections. Kolhapur finds mentions in Devi Gita, the final and
most important chapter of the Srimad Devi Bhagawatam. During 940-1212 CE, it was the capital
of the Shilahara dynasty of Kolhapur. An inscription at Teradal mentions that king Gonka was
healed from snakebite by a Jain monk and Gonk had built a temple of Lord Neminath. Majority of
the city dwellers are Marathas along with relatively smaller communities of Gujaratis, Marwadis,
Maharashtrian Jains, Lingayats and Sindhis. Kolhapur has one of the highest per-capita income for
a city in India. Trade is mostly dependent on farming of cash crops like sugarcane, the metal
industry with important inputs from textiles and mining. The prosperity and the resulting spending
prowess of the Kolhapuri people was famously reported in a list of cities with the highest number
of Mercedes cars in the state of Maharashtra, where Kolhapur came second only to Mumbai.
Similarly, Kolhapur also attracts lots of shoppers from around the region. The main shopping hub
of the city is Mahadwar Road, near Mahalaxmi Temple inside the old city walls. New and modern
stores have also popped up in the historically residential area, Rajarampuri. Another field that
Kolhapur prides itself of is films. In certain circles, Kolhapur was and is still considered the capital
of the Marathi film industry. It has been credited as the place where Raja Harishchandra, the first
feature film ever produced in India was conceptualized. Kolhapur still plays host to many film
festivals and provides location for shooting. Kolhapur is also a strong political center. Nationalist
Congress Party along with Congress is the current political powerhouses in the region.Kolhapur is
an attractive city in Maharashtra and a good base for seeing some of the hill stations around such
as Panhala. The most famous sight in town is the New Palace in Kolhapur. It houses the Shahaji
Chhatrapati Museum- a weird array of the former Maharaja's possessions, who recently died in
1983. British architect Charles Mant designed the New Palace in 1881 in the Indo-Sarcenic style.
