This document provides a report on a training conducted in Junagadh, Gujarat to empower women constables to conduct safety and self-defense workshops in their communities.
The 3-day training was conducted for 79 women constables from police stations across the region. It aimed to teach the constables communication and facilitation skills, as well as self-defense techniques and information on women's rights and available support services, so they could conduct regular community workshops.
Feedback from participants indicated the training helped boost their confidence and skills for empowering women in their communities with important safety information.
3. Introduction:
Gender based violence against women is on the rise. Eve teasing, abuse, molestation
etc. are increasingly common. In view of this, the government and the law enforcement
has a duty to undertake steps to reduce and combat this menace. It is also clear that
women empowerment, safety and self defense is critical to prevent and reduces such
incidences.
The purpose of this training is to train the women constables (2+ from each police
station) in self-defense, safety, development of self esteem and gender sensitization in
totality.
These constables in turn, will be empowered to conduct 1-2 community trainings of 2
hours on the above mentioned topics on a weekly basis. Our training will equip them
with knowledge about
1. Women empowerment, safety and self defense, confidence and positive attitude
2. Communication and training skills to enable them to conduct community programs
effectively
3. Training material that they can utilize for a more engaging and interactive
community program
Objective:
To assist Gujarat Home Dept in their endeavor to combat increasing cases of
violence and rape against women
Conduct Master trainings for police members (2 per station) and select
community leaders
o Impart effective communication strategies
o Provide effective training modules and appropriate IEC tools
o Provide training on topics such as
4. Self awareness and tips on recognizing precursors to abuse in male
behavior
Build personality, self esteem and confidence to thwart potential
oppressors
Teach self defense techniques through martial arts
Teach practical self defense tips using available tools
Awareness on available services for women safety
Understanding rights as a woman
Target Audience
Women Constable of Gujrarat
Women Constables are already engaged in roles related to law enforcement with
regards to women
They themselves are women and hence can relate to women’s issues and concerns in the
community and women safety in general
Women constable counseling and guiding women/girls in their wards through such
programs will build greater trust and bond between community and police
Workshop Methodology
Three Day Master Training Conducted by trained faculty that includes

3. Interesting and educative drama
4. Practical self defense demo and practice
5. Games & Role Plays
5. Pre Seminar Arrangements
Our representative coordinated with Mr. P.D.ZALA and assigned members from his team
to ensure smooth operation of the program. This included: Scoping out the location,
understanding available resources and planning for missing resources etc.
