Among the common diseases that can endanger a cat’s life is polycystic kidney
disease (PKD). Generally known to be an inheritable condition, this disease
causes the formation of multiple cysts, or pockets of fluid, in the kidneys.
When a cat has PKD, the cysts are already present at birth. Over time, the small
cysts grow bigger, disrupting proper kidney functions. When not detected and
treated, the cysts will cause kidney failure. People who own or are looking to
own Persian cats, as well as other breeds such as Chinchilla that originated
from the Persian bloodline, should be prepared to have their cats checked for
the PKD gene.
There are no specific treatments for PKD. Owners of cats with PKD are advised
to follow a special diet, as well as other measures to mitigate the symptoms of
kidney failure.
