This document contains excerpts from Samuel Hahnemann's Organon of the Healing Art that provide fragments of pure materia medica. It discusses how Hahnemann laid the foundation for future homeopathic materia medica by compiling effects of remedies he did not prove. The excerpts describe potential uses and provings of remedies like Pulsatilla, Sulphuric Acid, Aconite, Belladonna, Filix Mas, Sambucus Nigra, Petroselinum, Pimpinella Saxifraga, Sabina, Opium, Mercury, Violatricolor, Ulmus Fulva, Cinchona, Ignatia, Bryonia

3. IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIND IN
ORGANON, THE HIGHEST WISDOM OR
FOLLY AS PER THE NATURAL
TENDENCY OF THE READER!
August Karl Gustav Bier (1861-1949)
German surgeon & Pioneer of Spinal Anaesthesia
4. ‘Organon of the Healing Art’ is a book
that is essential for any medical
practitioner/ physician who intends
to master the art of healing.
5. The word ‘Organon’ is derived from
latin word, Organum, which means
an instrument of learning/ knowing.
It is the failure to grasp this true
meaning which has made the study
of Organon tedious and redundant.
6. James Tyler Kent,
An address preliminary to the study of
homoeopathics. Homoeopathician 1912; 1:6
..the masters of these living doctrines
and the materia medica have been
constant readers of this great work. Not
one of the great prescribers has ever
claimed a discovery not fully set forth in
this work, but in all their greatest
accomplishments have said that they
based their success upon the
Organon… …
7. James Tyler Kent
An address preliminary to the study of
homoeopathics. Homoeopathician 1912; 1:6
….It is the first book for the student to
read and the last for the old and busiest
physician to ponder over. When Lippe,
Wells and scores of others advocated a
continuous reading of this book during
their long careers, should we not
likewise look upon it with a feeling of
profound respect? ….
8. James Tyler Kent,
An address preliminary to the study of
homoeopathics. Homoeopathician 1912; 1:6
…. Should we not crave for the hidden
truths that has made these faithful
followers of law so successful? To whom
would a rational man apply for light
when desiring to follow law in healing
the sick and measuring out uses to
man? Naturally to Hahnemann and his
faithful adherents, and not to those who
smile at what they choose to consider
ravings of an aged man…
9. Organon is not just a book of philosophy,
it is a compendium of wisdom of
Hahnemann’s lifetime.
It is a chronicle of his pure
observations, scientific medical
experimentation, discoveries, re-
discoveries, convictions, successes,
failures, induction, his constant
endeavors to improvise, develop and
establish the ‘art of healing’ for the
posterity.
10. This is the reason why the esteemed
founder of homoeopathy,
Hahnemann, revised it six times.
We give below a compilation of
fragments of pure materia medica
from Hahnemann’s organon.
11. It is well known that Hahnemann proved
and published pure effects of 100
remedies (including Psorinum) during his
lifetime.
But Hahnemann, in order to establish
homoeopathy, also laid the the
foundation of future materia medica by
providing a compilation of toxicological
and curative effects of numerous other
remedies that he did not prove in his
lifetime.
12. His worthy successors, who diligently
read organon, also picked up his clues
for further enlargement of pure materia
medica.
They not only proved those remedies but
also benefitted from his practical tips on
usage of remedies in difficult or special
conditions.
14. INTRODUCTION, PG 4, F.N. 2
In a case of sudden derangement of the stomach,
with constant disgusting eructations with the taste of
the vitiated food, generally accompanied by
depression of spirits, cold hands and feet, etc
Such a derangement of the stomach is usually of
dynamic origin, caused by mental disturbance (grief,
fright, vexation), a chill, over-exertion of the mind or
body immediately after eating, often after even a
moderate meal..
....a single time at a globule the size of a mustard
seed, moistened with highly diluted pulsatilla
juice
15. INTRODUCTION, PG 5, F.N.
Even the acid gastric acid, to
eructations of which patients of
chronic diseases are not infrequently
subject…
…its dynamic cause is removed by
a very small dose of a high dilution
of sulphuric acid, or still better, if iit
is of frequent recurence, by the
employment of minutest doses of
antipsoric remedies..
16. INTRODUCTION, PG 5, F.N 3
In general inflammatory fevers, in
acute pleurisy…
…may be removed by the smallest
dose of a homogeneous
(homoeopathic) medicine, as, for
instance, by a small globule of the
decillion-fold dilution of aconite
juice, with abstinence from
vegetable acids..
17. INTRODUCTION, PG 10, F.N 1
Vermicular diseases
But the presence of these is always
dependent on a general taint of the
constitution (the psoric), joined to an
unhealthy mode of living. Let the latter be
removed and former cured
homoeopathically..
…the morbid symptoms of patients
suffering from tapeworm … are rapidly
relieved (homoeopathically) by the
smallest dose of tincture of male-fern
root (Filix mas aspidium)..
18. APPENDIX, PG 157, ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION…Vermicular dieases
“The tapeworm lives in the human body which has
not been made more ill by unsuitable medicines
( the tape-worm is most frequently met with in
subjects below the years of puberty-rather less
frequently at other ages ) for a few years only, to
wit, as long as the contents of the bowels are so
constituted as to contain nourishment for the worm.
But if the constitution of its human host gradually
changes, if he becomes stronger and healthier, then
his intestinal contents no longer afford sustenance
for the tape-worm; it diminishes in size and at last
goes away altogether, as though starved…
19. … or worn out by age. Hence it follows that the
physician can pursue no better treatment for the
tape-worm than to promote this necessary
alteration in the body by the homoeopathic, radical
cure of the chronic malady, which betrays itself by
those acute symptoms curable by fern-root and by
other signs, and when they are cured the tape-
worm disappears of its own accord (starved or
grown old), and the patient even should he be
attacked by indisposition, feels nothing more of the
worm.”

efforts to urinate in little children, ..in
ordinary gonorrhoea, which is well known
by the very painful, frequent and almost
ineffectual attempts to make water....
Parsley juice (Petroselinum)…the fresh
juice of this plant has the power of
causing, in healthy persons, a painful,
almost fruitless, urging to urinate &
consequently cures homoeopathically?

26. F.N. APHORISM 16, 6TH
EDN. PG 36
Most severe disease may be
produced by sufficient disturbance of
the vital force through the
imagination and also cured by the
same means.
27. F.N. APHORISM 17, PG 37
A warning dream, a superstitious fancy, or
a solemn prediction that death would
occur at a certain day or at a certain hour,
has not unfrequently produced all the
signs of commencing and increasing
disease, of approaching death and death
itself at the hour announced, which could
not happen without the simultaneous
production of inward change
(corresponding to the state observed
externally); and hence in such cases all
the morbid signs indicative of….
28. …approaching death have frequently been
dissipated by an identical cause, by some
cunning deception or persuasion to a belief
in the contrary, and health suddenly
restored, which could not have happened
without the removal, by means of this moral
remedy, of the internal and external morbid
change that threatened death.
29. F.N. APHORISM 33, PG 42-43
…smooth scarlatina of Sydenham still
occasionally prevailed epidemically
among children….all the children who
took in time a very small dose of
belladonna remained unaffected by this
highly infectious infantile disease…
30. F.N. APHORISM 160, PG 98
The facial eruption that viola tricolor
cured was aggravated by it at the
commencement of its action….. The bark
of elm (Ulmus fulva) cures most certainly
those skin diseases which it increases at
the beginning of its action…
31. F.N. APHORISM 183, PG 103
In cases where the patient (which,
however, happens excessively seldom in
chronic, but not infrequently in acute,
diseases) feels very ill, although his
symptoms are very indistinct, so that this
state may be attributed to the benumbed
state of the nerves, which does not permit
the patient’s pains and sufferings to be
distinctly perceived, this torpor of the
internal sensibility is removed by opium,
and in its secondary action the symptoms
of the disease become distinctly apparent.
32. F.N. APHORISM 213, PG 112
Thus Aconite will seldom or never
effect a rapid or permanent cure in a
patient of a quiet, calm, equable
disposition; and just as little will Nux
vomica be serviceable where the
disposition is mild and phlegmatic,
Pulsatilla where it is happy, gay and
obstinate, or Ignatia where it is
imperturbable and disposed neither to
be frightened nor vexed.
33. APHORISM 234, PG 118
Those apparently non-febrile, typical,
periodically recurring morbid states…
always belong to the chronic
diseases…. sometimes necessary to
employ as an intermediate remedy a
small dose of potentised solution of
cinchona bark, in order to extinguish
completely their intemittent type.
34. F.N. APHORISM 246, 5TH
EDN.
PG 124-125
…. But the vital force shows the
greatest resistance to salutary action
upon itself of the strongly indicated
sulphur, and even exhibits manifest
aggravation of the chronic disease,
though the sulphur be given in the
very smallest dose, though only a
globule of the size of mustard seed
moistened with tinct. Sulph X° be
smelt, …
35. …. if the sulphur have formerly (it may
be years since) been improperly given
allopathically in larger doses. This is
one lamentable circumstance that
renders the best medicinal treatment
of chronic diseases almost
impossible… …
36. …. In such cases we have only to let
the patient smell a single time
strongly at a globule the size of a
mustard seed moistened with
mercur metall. X, and allow this
olfaction to act for about nine days, in
order to make the vital force again
disposed to permit the sulphur (at least
the olfaction of tinct. Sulph. X°) to
exercise beneficial effect…
37. APHORISM 234, PG 118
Those apparently non febrile, typical,
periodically recurring morbid states…..
always belong to the chronic
diseases, mostly to those that are
purely psoric, are but seldom
complicated with syphilis,….it is
sometimes necessary to employ as
an intermediate remedy a small
dose of potentized solution of
cinchona bark, in order to extinguish
completely their intermittent type.
38. APHORISM 242, PG 121
If, however, in such an epidemic
intermittent fever the first paroxysms
have been left uncured, or if the
patients have been weakened by
improper allopathic treatment…. We
have now to do with psoric intermittent
fever only, and this will generally be
subdued by minute and rarely
repeated doses of sulphur or hepar
sulphuris in a high potency.
39. APHORISM 244, PG 122
…,and yet a healthy man may in his
youth become habituated even to
marshy districts and remain in good
health, provided he preserves a
faultless regimen and his system is
not lowered by want, fatigue or
pernicious passions….one of two
very small doses of a highly
potentized solution of cinchona
bark would… speedily free him from
the disease…
40. APHORISM 251, PG 129
There are some medicines (e.g.,
ignatia, also bryonia and rhus, and
sometimes belladonna) whose
power of altering man's health
consists chiefly in alternating actions
…. Should the practitioner find, on
prescribing one of these,….no
improvement follows, he will in most
cases soon effect his object by giving
(in acute diseases, even within a few
hours) a fresh and equally small dose
of the same medicine.
41. F.N. APHORISM 282, 6TH
EDN. PG 144
The rule to commence the homoeopathic
treatment of chronic diseases with the
smallest possible doses and only
gradually augment them is subject to a
notable exception in the treatment of the
three miasms while they still effloresce
on the skin…. These not only tolerate,
but indeed require, from the very
beginning large doses of their specific
remedies of ever higher and higher
degrees of dynamization daily
(possibly also several times daily)…
42. F.N. APHORISM 284, 6TH
EDN. PG 146
The power of medicines acting upon the
infant through the milk of the mother or
wet nurse is wonderfully helpful. Every
disease in a child yields to the rightly
chosen homoeopathic medicines given in
moderate doses to the nursing mother and
so administered, is more easily and
certainly utilized by these new world-
citizens than is possible in later years. ….
43. …..Since most infants usually have
imparted to them psora through the milk
of the nurse, if they do not already
possess it through heredity from the
mother, they may be at the same time
protected antipsorically by means of the
milk of the nurse rendered medicinally in
this manner……
44. ….But the case of mothers in their (first)
pregnancy by means of a mild antipsoric
treatment, especially with sulphur
dynamizations prepared according to the
directions in this edition (§ 270), is
indispensable in order to destroy the psora -
that producer of most chronic diseases -
which is given them hereditarily; destroy it
both within themselves and in the
foetus, thereby protecting posterity in
advance. ...
45. ….. This is true of pregnant women thus
treated; they have given birth to children
usually more healthy and stronger, to the
astonishment of everybody. A new
confirmation of the great truth of the
psora theory discovered by me.
46. APPENDIX PG 159 F.N.2
The case, as recorded, is as follows: “ A
man at Athens was seized with a cholera;
he vomited and had a discharge
downwards, and was in a good deal of pain.
His vomiting and purging could not be
stopped. His voice failed him, he could not
be turned in his bed; his eyes were covered
with a mist and were hollow. He was
affected with spasms, which extended from
his bowels up to his stomach, and then he
had the hiccup….
47. …. His stools were much more copious
than what he voided by vomiting. He drank
some hellebore in the juice of lentils, and
moreover, drank some of that juice after
it, as much as he could, and by this induced
a vomiting, after which both the vomiting
and purging stopped, but he became cold.
Then he washed himself downwards from
the middle, until the upper parts were quite
warm. He lived after this. The next day he
drank a pottage of barley”

The antipsoric medicines…. Contain no
so-called isopathic remedies, because
their pure effects, even those of the
potentized itch-miasm (psorin) are a
long way from being sufficiently
proved… I say homoeopathic, for the
prepared itch-matter does not remain
idem, even if given to the patient from
whom it was taken…
101. APPENDIX PG 221
A patient struck down with typhus,
insensible and comatose, with burning
hot skin bathed in perspiration, with
stertorous respiration coming from his
open mouth in a jerky interrupted
manner, &c. is restored to
consciousness and in few hours to
health by the smallest dose of opium…
102. This is just a small compilation
of one of the hidden treasures of
Organon.
A thorough study shall help us
discover many more.
103. As Dr J. N. Majumdar used to
say, ‘Whenever in doubt, refer
to the Organon and you shall
find the answer.’
The advice seems to have been
taken seriously by a man who is
as far from homoeopathy as can
be and yet so near!
104. …A human being's vitality resides in his
immune system, also referred to as the vital
force or the life force in homoeopathy. This
life force, unlike our physical (material)
organs, is a medium of (immaterial) energy.
We can neither see it nor touch it, yet every
doctor believes that it exists and regulates
our health. The immaterial life force of an
organisation, as distinct from all its material
resources, is its strategy.....

105. .... I believe most organisations fail because a
less-than-vital strategy inside them makes
them susceptible to the inimical conditions
outside them. In homoeopathic terms, the
external conditions are only the exciting
cause of their disease; the fundamental cause
lies within them. Thus the best advice that i
ever got was upon reading the Organon of
edicine by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the
founder of homoeopathy…
