 Dr. Eric Gan Keng Seng practices bariatric surgeries at Mount
Elizabeth Medical Centre in Singapore. In his work with surgical
weight loss, Dr. Eric Gan offers laparoscopic bands, sleeves, and
gastric bypasses.
Laparoscopic banding uses an adjustable band to restrict food
intake. The band is placed around the upper stomach during a
minimally invasive surgery. The resulting artificial stomach pouch is
small, so it fills up faster and prevents excessive food intake.
Gastric sleeve surgery involves the surgical removal of part of the
stomach. More than half of the stomach is removed, and the
remaining structure is a small, banana-sized vertical sleeve. This
small stomach limits food intake.
Gastric bypass surgery changes the path that food takes through the
digestive system. First, the stomach is altered to create a small
pouch, similar to gastric sleeve surgery. Then, this smaller stomach
pouch is connected to the small intestine. In this way, food bypasses
most of the stomach as well as the duodenum.
