MOSAICA
Present situation
• Abundance of resources: WWW, digital libraries, museums, digital
collections …
• Basic Internet technologies
• Scattered around the cyberspace
• Need to know in order to find it
• When you find it – need patience to appreciate it
8. o Potential consumers
o Do not know enough to find
o Do not have patience to enjoy it
o Used to highly interactive, dynamic and vibrant interfaces
o Potential providers:
o Presenting limited insight
o Bound to outdated technologies
dovw@savion.huji.ac.il http://jnul.huji.ac.il
MOSAICA
9. dovw@savion.huji.ac.il http://jnul.huji.ac.il
MOSAICA
VISION
• Use technology to conceptually model cultural heritage
• Base consumption on conceptual models – on knowledge
• Use technology to allow storytelling – narratives
• Combine multiple (distributed) resources to provide an exhaustive
insight into the domain of discourse
• Use technology to provide thrill
10. dovw@savion.huji.ac.il http://jnul.huji.ac.il
MOSAICA
Practical Implications
• Not “yellow pages” for other websites
• Elementary resources from which a narrative can
be created (as opposed to composite resources such as HTML
pages, MS Word documents, etc.)
• Facility to create narratives (Virtual Expedition)
• Facilities for collaborative editing:
• Online ontology editor
• Semantic Annotator
• Virtual Expedition Editor
• Publishing in user groups
• Structured authorization (Board of Editors)
11. dovw@savion.huji.ac.il http://jnul.huji.ac.il
MOSAICA way
Create YOUR own narrative
• Virtual Expedition editor
• Tell a story
• Search for resource
(Semantic Search, Semantic Browsing, GIS/TIS)
• Select a resource
• Contribute your own resource (Semantic Annotator)
• Collaborative editing – your resource reusable by others
• Publish through semantic annotation
Learn and enjoy
• Search for concept
• Understand concept
• Explore
• Enjoy the story – learn
• Explore …
12. dovw@savion.huji.ac.il http://jnul.huji.ac.il
MOSAICA
Where are we now?
• Got all basic technologies together
• Develop a robust architectural design
• Map resources, prepare use of resources, set the foundations of
conceptual modeling
• (Learn the problems typical for the entire domain of discourse
through hands-on experience – devise generic solutions)
• Understand how conceptual modeling can be transformed into
narratives
• Setup the initial toolbox
13. dovw@savion.huji.ac.il http://jnul.huji.ac.il
MOSAICA
• Fully develop the conceptual model for the selected domain of
discourse
• Integrate various technologies into a single delivery framework
• Consolidate Virtual Expedition methodology into mature technology
through hands-on experience
• Complete the toolbox
• Improve GIS/TIS (semantic enhancement), deploy P2P infrastructure
• Provide the thrill
• Integrate resources, resources and more resources
• Understand how to do business
• Vision for the future: "Each reader/viewer/ can become a
creator/editor/reviewer and can feed their contribution back to
the media space"

15. WP 1 Objectives
o To identify Web based resources in Jewish cultural heritage.
o To identify resources in Jewish cultural heritage suitable for
GIS.
o To negotiate access to the resources in Jewish cultural
heritage with the content owners, and resolve the
corresponding IPR issues.
o To populate MOSAICA ontology with selected resources in
Jewish cultural heritage.
o To define methodology and specify interface for dynamic,
online access to multiple, distributed resources in Jewish
cultural heritage
16. Criteria for Selection of Web-based Resources in
Jewish Heritage
CULTURE
Unesco definition in the Universal Declaration of Cultural Diversity
QUALITY
Accuracy, Clarity, Motivation
GRANULARITY
Intermediate level, enough to identify resource as within the scope
GIS
Resources which include a coordinate system or can easily be so
represented.
Guidelines for Entering Resources
http://www.ejewish.info/mosaica.html
17. CULTURE – based on Unesco Definition
Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (2002)
o Express the distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual
and emotional features of European Jewry (...
Catalonian, Celtic, Roma, Muslim... ), and that it
encompasses, in addition to art and literature, lifestyles,
ways of living together, value systems, traditions and
beliefs.
o It should be of interest to a diversified European public
broadly composes from different nationalities, ethnic
origins, linguistic and religious affiliations.
18. QUALITY Criterion
o ACCURACY
o The resource should be reliable, valid and produced by a
trusted source; information should be impartially presented;
resource must not contain biases, mistakes or omissions.
o CLARITY
o There should be a clear tie between the resource and
European Jewish Culture (... Catalonia, Roma, Scots,
Muslims...Culture ). Correlation should be comprehensive and
obvious.
o MOTIVATION
o The resource should achieve the active engagement of the user
and be interesting and appealing.
19. GRANULARITY Criterion
Intermediate level of granularity
o The resources should be content chunks large just
enough so as to be easily identified as being related to
the intended content area.
o They may be pages, video clips, text, sound and music
files that clearly can be identified and described as of
European Jewish Culture (... Catalonian, Celtic, Roma,
Muslim... ) interest.
20. Adequacy for GIS Criterion
... _strive to include a significant share of resources
which include a coordinate system which references a
particular place on earth.
Alternatively, resources which include clear geographical
specifications that are easily amenable to representation
by a coordinate system will be selected.
21. MOSAICA IPR Policy
o Memorandum of Understanding – January 2007
o Respect for the Copyrights of content providers
o Technological support for the expression and enforcement of
rights by content providers
