THEOLOGICAL
TEACHING
Calling and Preparation
of The Teacher
Domenic Marbaniang
SCRIPTURES
In General…
the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not
slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things--
(Tit 2:3 NKJ)
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need
someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of
God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
(Heb 5:12 NKJ)
Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a
teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let
all things be done for edification. (1Co 14:26 NKJ)
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching
and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Col 3:16 NKJ)
SCRIPTURES
In Gifting…
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some
evangelists, and some pastors and teachers (Eph 4:11 NKJ)
Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain
prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger,
Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen …and Saul. (Act 13:1 NKJ)
And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second
prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings,
helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are
all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?
(1Co 12:28-29 NKJ)
he who teaches, in teaching; (Rom 12:7 NKJ)
OT TEACHER
(LEVITE, TEACHER OF THE LAW)
"My covenant was with him, one of life and peace, And I gave
them to him that he might fear Me; So he feared Me And was
reverent before My name.
6 The law of truth was in his mouth, And injustice was not
found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and equity, And
turned many away from iniquity.
7 "For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people
should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of
the LORD of hosts.
(Mal 2:5-7 NKJ)
OT TEACHER
(NON-LEVITE)
Gamaliel (Acts 5:24), a Pharisee and descendent of Hillel the Elder
from the tribe of Benjamin.
The Scribes and Pharisees. “Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes
and to His disciples, saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in
Moses' seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that
observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they
say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and
lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move
them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen
by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the
borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the
best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and
to be called by men,`Rabbi, Rabbi.‘ But you, do not be
called`Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all
brethren. (Mat 23:1-8 NKJ)
NT TEACHER
the apostles' doctrine [didache] (Act 2:42 NKJ)
teach in this name [of Christ].. your doctrine [of Apostles]
(Act 5:28 NKJ)
my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.
(1Co 4:17 NKJ)
These things command and teach. (1Ti 4:11 NKJ)
Teach and exhort these things. If anyone teaches otherwise and
does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord
Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness
(1Ti 6:2-3 NKJ)
the first principles of the oracles of God; (Heb 5:12 NKJ)
elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection,
(Heb 6:1 NKJ)
NT TEACHER
beware of the leaven … of the doctrine of the Pharisees and
Sadducees. (Mat 16:12 NKJ)
you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were
delivered. (Rom 6:17 NKJ)
repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the
doctrine [didache] of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of
resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. (Heb 6:1-2 NKJ)
note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the
doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. (Rom 16:17 NKJ)
If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good
minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the
good doctrine [didaskalia] which you have carefully followed.
(1Ti 4:6 NKJ)
SEMINARY TEACHER
In modern times, the Seminary teacher is not necessarily a
teacher of doctrines; however, it doesn’t mean that he must be
void of doctrinal foundations, whatever his specialization may be
in.
1. Should have strong and accurate doctrinal foundation.
2. Should have a teachable and submissive nature, that has
respect for authority.
3. Should have eagerness to study, research, and learn,
continually updating knowledge.
4. Should have a godly and pious character, daily seeking the
Lord in all things.
5. Should have the ability to teach and present complex ideas in
simple forms.
SEMINARY TEACHER
6. Should have a heart of mercy and kindness and not just follow
the letter of the Law.
7. Should have a just and fair character, devoid of partiality or
malice.
8. Should possess the necessary qualifications/credentials to
prove his proficiency in the field of teaching he desires to
minister in.
9. Should be dedicated to the ministry of teaching.
10. Should be sure of his calling, and not have a grasshopper
attitude of jumping from one area to another.
11. Should not have the love of money.
12. Should not be a flatterer or man-pleaser.
SEMINARY TEACHER
13. Should be able to critically evaluate books, writings, and ideas
in light of the faith once received, i.e. the Scriptures.
14. If married, should have a good marital life and should not bring
family affairs in class.
15. Should be willing to serve in any capacity other than teaching,
extending an hand of help wherever needed.
16. Should not be a problem-raiser; rather be a problem-solver; for
a teacher is a wiseman with wisdom to solve problems, not just
a man with questions.
17. Should not be carnal competitioner, comparing colleges or
professors with others; or not willing to cooperate with others.
SEMINARY TEACHER
18. Should not be ungrateful and discontent, trying to discourage
students in a college by telling them of his own college (if he
has been from another) and showing how pitiable their
situation is.
19. Should be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
20. Should be punctual in class, in record submissions, etc.
21. Should be diligent at teaching, finding various means and
helps to help students learn.
22. Should not be rude and complaining, or discouraging to
students for not being able to comprehend his teaching. He
should be a good teacher first before expecting his students to
be good.
23. He should trust in God and not in his own understanding.

Calling and Preparation of a Theological Teacher

  • 1. THEOLOGICAL TEACHING Calling and Preparation of The Teacher Domenic Marbaniang
  • 2. SCRIPTURES In General… the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things-- (Tit 2:3 NKJ) For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. (Heb 5:12 NKJ) Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. (1Co 14:26 NKJ) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Col 3:16 NKJ)
  • 3. SCRIPTURES In Gifting… And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers (Eph 4:11 NKJ) Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen …and Saul. (Act 13:1 NKJ) And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? (1Co 12:28-29 NKJ) he who teaches, in teaching; (Rom 12:7 NKJ)
  • 4. OT TEACHER (LEVITE, TEACHER OF THE LAW) "My covenant was with him, one of life and peace, And I gave them to him that he might fear Me; So he feared Me And was reverent before My name. 6 The law of truth was in his mouth, And injustice was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and equity, And turned many away from iniquity. 7 "For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. (Mal 2:5-7 NKJ)
  • 5. OT TEACHER (NON-LEVITE) Gamaliel (Acts 5:24), a Pharisee and descendent of Hillel the Elder from the tribe of Benjamin. The Scribes and Pharisees. “Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men,`Rabbi, Rabbi.‘ But you, do not be called`Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. (Mat 23:1-8 NKJ)
  • 6. NT TEACHER the apostles' doctrine [didache] (Act 2:42 NKJ) teach in this name [of Christ].. your doctrine [of Apostles] (Act 5:28 NKJ) my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church. (1Co 4:17 NKJ) These things command and teach. (1Ti 4:11 NKJ) Teach and exhort these things. If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness (1Ti 6:2-3 NKJ) the first principles of the oracles of God; (Heb 5:12 NKJ) elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, (Heb 6:1 NKJ)
  • 7. NT TEACHER beware of the leaven … of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees. (Mat 16:12 NKJ) you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. (Rom 6:17 NKJ) repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine [didache] of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. (Heb 6:1-2 NKJ) note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. (Rom 16:17 NKJ) If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine [didaskalia] which you have carefully followed. (1Ti 4:6 NKJ)
  • 8. SEMINARY TEACHER In modern times, the Seminary teacher is not necessarily a teacher of doctrines; however, it doesn’t mean that he must be void of doctrinal foundations, whatever his specialization may be in. 1. Should have strong and accurate doctrinal foundation. 2. Should have a teachable and submissive nature, that has respect for authority. 3. Should have eagerness to study, research, and learn, continually updating knowledge. 4. Should have a godly and pious character, daily seeking the Lord in all things. 5. Should have the ability to teach and present complex ideas in simple forms.
  • 9. SEMINARY TEACHER 6. Should have a heart of mercy and kindness and not just follow the letter of the Law. 7. Should have a just and fair character, devoid of partiality or malice. 8. Should possess the necessary qualifications/credentials to prove his proficiency in the field of teaching he desires to minister in. 9. Should be dedicated to the ministry of teaching. 10. Should be sure of his calling, and not have a grasshopper attitude of jumping from one area to another. 11. Should not have the love of money. 12. Should not be a flatterer or man-pleaser.
  • 10. SEMINARY TEACHER 13. Should be able to critically evaluate books, writings, and ideas in light of the faith once received, i.e. the Scriptures. 14. If married, should have a good marital life and should not bring family affairs in class. 15. Should be willing to serve in any capacity other than teaching, extending an hand of help wherever needed. 16. Should not be a problem-raiser; rather be a problem-solver; for a teacher is a wiseman with wisdom to solve problems, not just a man with questions. 17. Should not be carnal competitioner, comparing colleges or professors with others; or not willing to cooperate with others.
  • 11. SEMINARY TEACHER 18. Should not be ungrateful and discontent, trying to discourage students in a college by telling them of his own college (if he has been from another) and showing how pitiable their situation is. 19. Should be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. 20. Should be punctual in class, in record submissions, etc. 21. Should be diligent at teaching, finding various means and helps to help students learn. 22. Should not be rude and complaining, or discouraging to students for not being able to comprehend his teaching. He should be a good teacher first before expecting his students to be good. 23. He should trust in God and not in his own understanding.
