2. Chickenpox/Varicella
• Chickenpox is a very
contagious disease caused by
the varicella-zoster virus
(VZV). It causes a blister-like
rash, itching, tiredness, and
fever. Chickenpox used to be
very common in the United
States. Each year, chickenpox
caused about 4 million cases,
about 10,600 hospitalizations
and 100 to 150 deaths.

5. Chicken pox can Manifest as
Shingles in future
•Shingles is a painful rash
illness, which
sometimes leads to
long-term nerve pain. A
shingles vaccine called
Shingrix is the best way
to help protect yourself
against shingles

6. About shingles
• Shingles, also known as herpes
zoster, is an infection of a nerve
and the skin around it. It's
caused by the varicella-zoster
virus, which also causes
chickenpox.
It's estimated that
around one in every four
people will have at least
one episode of shingles
during their life.

7. Causes of shingles
Most people have chickenpox
in childhood, but after the
illness has gone, the varicella-
zoster virus remains
dormant (inactive) in the
nervous system. The immune
system keeps the virus in
check, but later in life it can be
reactivated and cause shingles.

8. Causes of Shingles
less understood ?
• It's possible to have shingles
more than once, but it's very
rare to get it more than twice.
It's not known exactly why
the shingles virus is
reactivated at a later stage in
life, but most cases are
thought to be caused by
having lowered immunity

9. SHINGLES MAY BE THE RESTULT OF
• old age – as you age, your immunity may decrease, and shingles most
commonly occurs in people over 70 years old
• physical and emotional stress – the chemicals released by your body
when you're stressed can prevent your immune system working properly
• HIV and AIDS – people with HIV are much more likely to get shingles than
the rest of the population because their immune system is weak
• recently having a bone marrow transplant – the conditioning you require
before the transplant weakens your immune system
• recently having an organ transplant – you may need to take medication
to suppress your immune system so your body accepts the donated organ
• chemotherapy – chemotherapy medication, often used to treat cancer,
can temporarily weaken your immune system

10. Complications of shingles
• Shingles can sometimes lead to
complications, such as
postherpetic neuralgia. This is
where severe nerve pain lasts for
several months or more after
the rash has gone.
Complications such as this are
usually in elderly people who have
had the condition and those with
a weakened immune system.

11. Shingles Vaccines
• Two vaccines are licensed and
recommended to prevent
shingles in the U.S... Zoster
vaccine live (ZVL, Zostavax) has
been in use since 2006.
Recombinant zoster vaccine
(RZV, Shingrix), has been in use
since 2017 and is recommended
by ACIP as the preferred
shingles vaccine.

12. Shingles Vaccination Protects
•Shingles vaccination is
the only way to
protect against
shingles and post
herpetic neuralgia
(PHN), the most
common complication
from shingles.
23-02-2020 12Dr.T.V.Rao MD @Vaccination of Shingles
13. CDC Recommends
• CDC recommends that
healthy adults 50 years
and older get two doses
of the shingles vaccine
called Shingrix
(recombinant zoster
vaccine), separated by
2 to 6 months, to
prevent shingles and
the complications from
the disease
23-02-2020 13Dr.T.V.Rao MD @Vaccination of Shingles
14. Shingrix provides strong
protection
• Shingrix provides strong
protection against shingles
and PHN. Two doses of
Shingrix is more than 90%
effective at preventing
shingles and PHN.
Protection stays above 85%
for at least the first four
years after you get
vaccinated.

15. If you’re 50 or older, get Shingrix
• Shingrix provides strong protection
from shingles and long-term nerve
pain.
• ƒGet Shingrix even if you already had
shingles,because you can get the
disease more than once.
• ƒYour risk of shingles and
complications increases as you age.
• ƒYou need 2 doses of Shingrix. Get the
seconddose 2 to 6 months after you
get the frst dose.
23-02-2020 15Dr.T.V.Rao MD @Vaccination of Shingles
16. Shingrix is the preferred vaccine
• Shingrix is the preferred
vaccine, over Zostavax®
(zoster vaccine live), a
shingles vaccine in use since
2006. Zostavax may still be
used to prevent shingles in
healthy adults 60 years and
older.
23-02-2020 16Dr.T.V.Rao MD @Vaccination of Shingles
17. Who Should Get Shingrix?
•Healthy adults 50
years and older
should get two doses
of Shingrix, separated
by 2 to 6 months. You
should get Shingrix
even if in the past you
23-02-2020 17Dr.T.V.Rao MD @Vaccination of Shingles
18. Even if you had Shingles Still you
can get Vaccinated
• If you had shingles in the
past, you can get Shingrix to
help prevent future
occurrences of the disease.
There is no specific length of
time that you need to wait
after having shingles before
you can receive Shingrix, but
generally you should make
sure the shingles rash has
gone away before getting
vaccinated.
