8. Suffering Servant verses
Religious Authorities want to kill him: 8:30-
33
And he strictly charged them to tell no one
about him. And he began to teach them that the
Son of Man must suffer many things and be
rejected by the elders and the chief priests and
the scribes and be killed, and after three days
rise again. And he said this plainly…
9. Suffering Servant
He will Rise again after three days: 9:30-32
They went on from there and passed through
Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know,
for he was teaching his disciples, saying to
them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered
into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And
when he is killed, after three days he will rise.”
But they did not understand the saying, and
were afraid to ask him.
10. Suffering Servant
He will be handed over to the gentiles: 10:32-34
And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and
Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were
amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking
the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to
happen to him, saying, “See, we are going up to
Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to
the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn
him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And
they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill
him. And after three days he will rise.”
11. Suffering Servant
His death will be a ransom for many: 10:45
For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for
many.”
12. Suffering Servant
Parable reveals his death as prophesied
12:1-2
And he began to speak to them in parables. “A
man planted a vineyard and put a fence around
it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a
tower, and leased it to tenants and went into
another country. When the season came, he
sent a servant to the tenants to get from them
some of the fruit of the vineyard.
13. Suffering Servant
Anointing anticipated his death: 14:6-9
But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you
trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
For you always have the poor with you, and
whenever you want, you can do good for them. But
you will not always have me. She has done what
she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for
burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is
proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done
will be told in memory of her.”
14. Suffering Servant
Shepherd will be stricken, sheep scattered
14:20-21
He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one
who is dipping bread into the dish with me. For
the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but
woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is
betrayed! It would have been better for that man
if he had not been born.”
