The Irish Farmers Journal has always been to the forefront in the utilisation of new
technology and the development of services for our commercial clients. We are
confident that with over 279,000 readers (JNRS) our weekly print publication continues
to take centre stage for any business looking to inform and market to farm families.
In addition we’ve significantly developed our range of digital platforms over the past 12
months with farmersjournal.ie now attracting close to one million page views per month.
This is now a significant marketing channel for our clients. Together, we are confident
that our extensive range of print and digital offerings give us an unrivalled reach across
the farming and rural community.
All these new channels give rise to a more diverse range of marketing options from
content marketing to infographics. With this in mind we’re invested in our team and
developed an enhanced range of marketing solutions for our clients. Traction is the
name of this new and enhanced marketing solutions business. Traction services include
creating content for our clients to use online or in a Farmers Journal print advertorial,
producing photos for social platforms or creating videos for a YouTube channel.
We have also developed a network of key resources which enable us to deliver digital
solutions from content management systems and app development through to SEO
and remarketing.
Traction is about offering our customers a steadfast grip in a constantly developing
marketing landscape. It is about supplying our commercial clients with the tools
necessary to help drive their business forward.

If content is king then video is the heir apparent. The successes of upstarts
like Vine and Snapchat combined with moves from stalwarts like Facebook
and Twitter to become more like video platforms means video has to play
an integral part to marketing plans. At the Irish Farmers Journal we’re well
aware that YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and
we’ve utilised our own channel, farmersjournal.tv, to further engage with

7. THE PROBLEM
FoodCloud connects businesses that have surplus food with
charities that have too little. FoodCloud offers a fast and efficient
way for businesses to donate surplus food to charities within
their communities. Surplus food is food that is perfectly fit for
human consumption but cannot be sold for a variety of reasons
e.g. fresh produce that will not be sold the next day, short dated
product, slightly damaged packaging or mistakes in ordering.

THE SOLUTION
Businesses use the FoodCloud app to upload details of their
excess food. A number of local charities receive a text message
notifying them about the food donation. The charity responds to
the message, and claims the donation. The charity picks up the
donation and serves it to those in need in the local community.
To date there have been 9,100 donations incorporating 325
tonnes of food which is equivalent to 715,000 meals. FoodCloud
will launch in 433 Tesco superstores in the UK in July 2015.
