Husbands are to please, love, and care for their wives. The passage discusses laws around divorce, kidnapping, treatment of employees and hired servants, orphans and widows, corporal punishment, and animal cruelty. God shows concern for the vulnerable in society through these laws. Divorce is allowed due to hardness of heart but breaking up families was to be discouraged. Overall the passage emphasizes caring for the less fortunate.

and sends her out from his house,
• NAU Matthew 5:31 "It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS
WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF

4. Deuteronomy 24:1, Divorce
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:1…he writes her a certificate of divorce…
• NAU Mark 10:2 Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him,
and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to
divorce a wife. 3 And He answered and said to them, "What did
Moses command you?" 4 They said, "Moses permitted a man TO
WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY." 5 But
Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote
you this commandment. 6 "But from the beginning of creation,
God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. 7 "FOR THIS REASON A

6. Matthew 19:3,
• Matthew 19:3 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and
asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason
at all?"
• The Net Bible note is, “The question of the Pharisees was
anything but sincere; they were asking it to test him. Jesus was
now in the jurisdiction of Herod Antipas (i.e., Judea and
beyond the Jordan) and it is likely that the Pharisees were
hoping he might answer the question of divorce in a way
similar to John the Baptist and so suffer the same fate as John,
i.e., death at the hands of Herod (cf. Mat 14:1-12). Jesus
answered the question not on the basis of rabbinic custom
and the debate over Deu 24:1, but rather from the account of
creation and God's original design.”
7. Matthew 19:3, For Any Reason At All
• Matthew 19:3 …"Is it lawful for a man to divorce his
wife for any reason at all?"
• The question of divorce was the basis of a huge
rabbinic debate for a long time.
• Center of the meaning of “indecency in her”;
• Deuteronomy 24:1 "When a man takes a wife and
marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor
in his eyes because he has found some indecency
in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and
puts it in her hand and sends her out from his

12. Deuteronomy 24:1, Divorce
• When answering questions concerning divorce we need to
remember that God allowed it because of our hard hearts, and sin
nature.
• Divorce is not the unforgivable sin, and that God provided for it. God
said He divorced Israel because of her harlotry with idols, so it
cannot possibly be sin. Divorce is not included in any of the lists of
sins (1 Corinthians 6, Rev. 21, etc.).
• Divorce is always the result of sin, and it results in more sinning.
• 1 Corinthians 7:10-15 gives instruction to Christians concerning
divorce.
• In Matthew 1:19, Joseph is called a righteous man who was going to
divorce his wife.
13. Deuteronomy 24:5,
Husbands Love Your Wives
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:5 "When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go
out with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home
one year and shall give happiness to his wife whom he has taken.
• God puts a very high priority on building a solid marriage, a strong family,
even to the point of having fewer soldiers in the army.
• God uses the metaphor of the bride and bridegroom to describe our
relationship with Him.
• NAU Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the
marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will
judge.
• Husbands are to please, love, and care for their wives;
• NAU 1 Corinthians 7:33 but one who is married is concerned about the
things of the world, how he may please his wife,
• NAU Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved
the church and gave Himself up for her,
• NAU Ephesians 5:28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as
their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;
14. Deuteronomy 24:6, Tools
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:6 "No one shall take a
handmill or an upper millstone in pledge, for he
would be taking a life in pledge.
• I see pawn shops full of workmen’s tools and
am reminded of this verse.
14
15. Deuteronomy 24:7, Kidnapping
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:7 "If a man is caught
kidnapping any of his countrymen of the sons
of Israel, and he deals with him violently or
sells him, then that thief shall die; so you shall
purge the evil from among you.
• Kidnapping was a capital offense.
• Kidnapping has become rampant in many third
world countries.
15
17. Deuteronomy 24:14,
Hired Servants
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:14 "You shall not
oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy,
whether he is one of your countrymen or one
of your aliens who is in your land in your
towns.
• I wonder if labor relations in America would be
different if every employer obeyed this verse?
17
18. Deuteronomy 24:14,
Hired Servants
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:14 "You shall not oppress
a hired servant…
• NAU Malachi 3:5 "Then I will draw near to you
for judgment; and I will be a swift witness
against the sorcerers and against the adulterers
and against those who swear falsely, and against
those who oppress the wage earner in his
wages, the widow and the orphan, and those
who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me,"
says the LORD of hosts. 18
19. Deuteronomy 24:16,
Death For His Own Sin
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:16 "Fathers shall not be
put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be
put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be
put to death for his own sin.
• NAU Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is
death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in
Christ Jesus our Lord
19
20. Deuteronomy 24:16,
Death For His Own Sin
• Jeremiah 31:29-30 "In those days they will not say again, 'The
fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are
set on edge.' 30 "But everyone will die for his own iniquity;
each man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be set on
edge.
• NAU Ezekiel 18:2 "What do you mean by using this proverb
concerning the land of Israel, saying, 'The fathers eat the sour
grapes, But the children's teeth are set on edge '? 3 "As I
live," declares the Lord GOD, "you are surely not going to use
this proverb in Israel anymore. 4 "Behold, all souls are Mine;
the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine.
The soul who sins will die.
21. Romans 11:17, Olive Tree
Jerusalem Inspiration In Biblical times, olive trees were
harvested by beating the branches with a stick, causing the
olives to fall to the ground. Farmers saw this as a testimony to
the blessing of abundance in the Land of Israel. There was so
much produce that the farmers only needed to harvest what
had fallen off with the beating of the tree branches; they did
not need to bother to climb a ladder in order to reach what was
left at the top!

22. Deuteronomy 24:19
Orphans And Widows
• NAU Deuteronomy 24:19 "When you reap your harvest in
your field and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not
go back to get it; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and
for the widow, in order that the LORD your God may bless you
in all the work of your hands.
• NAU James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our
God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their
distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
• NAU 1 Timothy 5:4 but if any widow has children or
grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard
to their own family and to make some return to their parents;
for this is acceptable in the sight of God.
• Margaret Willour once said, “Never lose sight of the fact that
old age needs so little but needs that little so much.”
23. Deuteronomy 24:20, Olive Trees
• Jerusalem Daily Photo “Today's photo by Yehoshua Halevi

• NAU Deuteronomy 24:20 "When you beat your olive tree, you
shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the alien, for
the orphan, and for the widow.
24. Deuteronomy 24:20, Olive Trees
Shabbat Inspiration “A legendary Israeli storyteller describes three
clergymen on a visit to Mount Zion in 1965. When they asked the
Jewish curator why the Jews claim Jerusalem as their capital, he
replied with a story. When Moses appointed Aaron as High Priest, a
man named Korach objected. It was only once Aaron's staff
blossomed that the people accepted him as the High Priest, as the
blossoming rod symbolized life and vitality. The curator then pointed
and said: “In the old Arab section of the city there is desolation, yet
here in new Jerusalem, everywhere you look you see life, growth,
and vitality. Jerusalem belongs to those who make it bud and
blossom, to those who make it live and grow.”
26. Deuteronomy 25:3, 40 Lashes
• NAU Deuteronomy 25:3 "He may beat him
forty times but no more, so that he does not

and your brother is not degraded in your eyes.
• NAU 2 Corinthians 11:24 Five times I received
from the Jews thirty-nine lashes.
• NAU John 19:1 Pilate then took Jesus and
scourged Him.
• God mercifully limits human cruelty.

27. Deuteronomy 25:4
Treat Animals Fairly Also
• NAU Deuteronomy 25:4 "You shall not muzzle
the ox while he is threshing.
• This verse is in the immediate context of
treating employees humanely and fairly. I
believe God would have us treat animals justly
also.
• NAU Proverbs 12:10 A righteous man has
regard for the life of his animal, But even the
compassion of the wicked is cruel.
27
28. Deuteronomy 25:4, God Loves Animals
• God has concern for all His creation; NAU Psalm 147:9 He
gives to the beast its food, And to the young ravens which
cry. NAU Luke 12:24 "Consider the ravens, for they
neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn,
and yet God feeds them…
• NAU Luke 12:6 "Are not five sparrows sold for two cents?
Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.s
• Gave us dominion over animals; NAU Genesis 1:28…fill
the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea
and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing
that moves on the earth."
29. Deuteronomy 25:4
Old and New Testament Scripture
• NAU 1 Timothy 5:18 For the Scripture says, "YOU SHALL
NOT MUZZLE THE OX WHILE HE IS THRESHING," and "The
laborer is worthy of his wages."
• The apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 5:18, used Deuteronomy
25:4 and Luke 10:7, ascribing them both the status of
Scripture, both the Old and New Testament inspired as the
very word of God.
• NAU 2 Peter 3:2 that you should remember the words
spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the
commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your
apostles.

30. Deuteronomy 25:5
Taking His Brother's Wife
• Deuteronomy 25:5-10 "When brothers live together and one
of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall
not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her
husband's brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as
wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her….
• Genesis 38:9 Onan knew that the offspring would not be his;
so when he went in to his brother's wife, he wasted his seed
on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother.
• Leviticus 18:16 'You shall not uncover the nakedness of your
brother's wife; it is your brother's nakedness. Leviticus 20:21
'If there is a man who takes his brother's wife, it is abhorrent…

• Mark 6:18 For John …to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have
your brother's wife.“ (Luke 3:19 also)
• Ruth 3:9-12 …"I am Ruth your maid. So spread your covering
over your maid, for you are a close relative.“….12 "Now it is
true I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer
than I….

32. Matthew 22:23-28, His Brother's Wife
• Matthew 22:25 "Now there were seven
brothers with us; and the first married and
died, and having no children left his wife to his
brother;
• There are requirements of The Law when a
brother died; “When brothers live together”,
“having no children”, “the firstborn whom she
bears shall assume the name of his dead
brother”
34. Deuteronomy 25:19
God Will Punish Every Sin
• NAU Deuteronomy 25:19 "Therefore it shall come about when
the LORD your God has given you rest from all your surrounding
enemies, in the land which the LORD your God gives you as an
inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek
from under heaven; you must not forget.
• Jerusalem Inspiration “Throughout history, many nations have
tried to destroy the Jewish people, and we are commanded in
today's verse to permanently remember the attack of one of
these biblical nations, Amalek. The root of their evil, which
disseminated to others to this day, was complete lack of fear of
God….”
• DLK adds, “If God takes this kind of action against soldiers who
(Deuteronomy 25:18) “…attacked …the stragglers at your rear
when you were faint and weary…”, just imagine what you must
have in store for those who killed innocent babies in the womb.”

• Q. Can you give references for the following statement from your Revelation 5 article? I
am interested in searching further regarding it. “A son could redeem what his father had
lost.” Could Seth have redeemed what Adam lost?
• A. Leviticus 25:25 says that “If one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells some of
his property, his nearest relative is to come and redeem what his countryman has
sold.” This would normally be a father, son, or brother. Later, inLev. 25:49 this list is
expanded to include an uncle or cousin or any blood relative. The obligation fell to the
closest kin who was capable.
• In Adam’s case, none of his sons would have been capable because the redemption price
to redeem Adam was the blood of a sinless man. Every son of Adam inherited a sin nature
and was therefore disqualified from redeeming him.
