• Some of my friends belong to a group that does not believe women should cut their hair, wear jewelry, or wear slacks. They, of course, are quoting the
writings of Paul to prove their point: 1 Timothy 2:9, "women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and
gold or pearls or costly garments." Is this infallible scripture or merely customs of the day?

ANSWER:
• The scripture is indeed infallible, but the context of that verse is being distorted. It simply means that a woman's adornment emphasis should not be on
the external, but the internal. The following verse shows that intended emphasis by continuing the thought, "but rather by means of good works, as
befits women making a claim to godliness." Braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothes are not in themselves wrong. But overemphasis on them may
represent misplaced values.
• Women should not dress in such a way as to draw attention to themselves through immodest dress, showy clothing, or extremely wild hair. 1 Peter 3:3
uses some of the same words: "braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry," but then continues to say that your dress should, in effect, NOT stop at just
that, but also, "let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God."
• There is nothing wrong with trying to look your best or wearing nice clothes at appropriate times. Remember, Jesus had a verynice coat made without a
seam. Nice enough that the soldiers cast lots to see who would get it!
• Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic
was seamless, woven in one piece. So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; this was to fulfill the
Scripture: "THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS."—John 19:23-24Wearing pants by women is
not prohibited in scripture. Deuteronomy 22:5 says a "woman shall not wear a man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing." The Hebrew
word used there is the same Hebrew word used in Leviticus 18:22 where it states God detests homosexuality. Therefore, in proper context, a man is not
to try to look like a woman, and a woman is not to try to look like a man (transvestism).

• If men wore their hair long in the 1st century (as I’ve always believed), then why would Paul say that
long hair is dishonorable to a man?
• A. 1 Cor. 11:14-15 is a relative statement. In Paul’s time women let their hair grow long enough to
come down almost to their waist. But men didn’t let their hair grow below their shoulders. Today we
think a man with shoulder length hair has very long hair, but in Paul’s day it was the norm. What was
dishonoring was for a man to let his hair grow so long it resembled a woman’s hair.
• This is similar to the prohibition against women dressing like men and men dressing like women
(Deut. 22:5). It was not meant to prevent women from wearing pants to church. Neither sex wore
pants in Biblical times. It was a prohibition against “cross dressing”, where women dress to present
themselves as men and men dress to present themselves as women.
