What is poetics?
● According to oxford dictionary, poetics means, “ The art of writing poetry!”
● “ The study of linguistic techniques in poetry and literature.”
● If we see poetics with the context of literature, we can surely tell that
literature is not only about writing poetry, drama, novel, short story etc. But
literature is all about art and creativity.
● The term poetics also connected with the idea of systematic writing of
poetry. The term poetics means the study of literature.
● As we know Literature is part if art and art is a source of eternal happiness.
What is indian poetics?
● We can consider Indian poetics as “Great heritage” of india.
● Under the term of indian poetics there are so many school or Sampradaya.
● All the schools give information about how to write poetry or piece of
literature in systematic way.
● When we come to know about all the school of indian poetics, we find way
to get happiness by the reading of the that piece of art.
● Indian poetics is not only connected with writing, but it is also connected
with drama, painting,dancing etc.
Continue..
● Indian poetics is written in sanskrit language. There were so many sanskrit
scholars in india, who gave their views upon How to write literature in
systematic way or real ideology to write perfect literature.
● In sanskrit language there is a word, “Sahitya” for literature which
etymologically means coordination, balance, contact. So hear in indian
poetics deals with coordination of all school of poetics in literary work.
● Let’s look upon different school of poetics.
Different school of Indian poetics:
● Alamkara (poetic figures)school
● Rasa (aesthetic pleasure) school
● Riti (style) school
● Guna (attributes) school
● Dhvani (suggestion) school
● Vakrokti (obliquity) school
● Auchitya (propriety)school
Dhvani Theory (suggestion school)
● Dhvani theory come into limelight in 9th century. Anand vardhana was the
founder of this theory. He dominate Indian poetics from 9th t0 12c.
● Anand vardhana wrote text “ Dhavanyalok” Where he discussed about
Dhvani.
● “Feelings can not be objectively brought to consciousness by libral
expression(direct sentence), it can be made an object of direct experience
only through indirect expression.”
● It means hidden meaning of the poem is deeper aspect of the poetry.
Three types of Dhvani by Anad Vardhana
1. Vsatu dhvani: (Abhidha) some rare facts or thoughts and idea
implied.
2. Alamkara dhvani : (Lakshana) some figure of speech is suggested
3. Rasa dhvani: (vyanjana) rasa is evoked. It consists in suggesting
Bhavas, Feelings or sentients.
Conclusion :
● When we read any literature or piece of art we received some kind of
happiness or esthetic delight. All schools of indian poetics is very important.
Without any school of poetics, the work of literature can not be created.
● Literature only can be created with creativity and imagination.
