Greed for Power In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a group of English boys in their
adolescence are stranded on an island. They crash–land while being evacuated because of an atomic
war, so the boys must learn to cooperate with each other in order to survive. The boys are civil at
first, but the bonds of civilization unfold as the rapacity for power and immediate desires become
more important than civility and rescue. The conflict between Ralph, the protagonist, and Jack, the
antagonist, represents the conflict between the impulse to civilization and the impulse to savagery,

The conch was used to call meetings and whosoever held it, had the power to speak. Jack starts to
disobey the conch because he is turning more and more savage–like. "[T]hey closed in on the
struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken
away its life like a long satisfying drink," thought Jack. As the story progresses, Jack realizes he
wants to kill pigs, not keep fires going for rescue. Jack shouted, "We don't need the conch
anymore." At this point in the novel, Golding is showing the reader that because Jack is lusting for

First impressions are everything. Without them, true character would never shine through in most
people. Characters in stories are most definitely not exempt from this rule, especially when
speaking of Jack and Ralph from Golding's Lord of the Flies. In chapter 6, when entering a new
landscape, Jack and Ralph have wildly different reactions. Jack ignores Ralph's request to stay

the first day of high school, I knew that it would be hectic and wild, but I was ecstatic. Of course,

Survival Of Lord Of The Flies Theme Essay
After reading "Lord of The Flies" for sometime now, I can slowly begin to see what the theme is
that is emerging from the book. The subject of the novel, is about survival and cooperation
because Ralph (the main protagonist of the story) finds himself on an island all by himself.
However, later in the book we find that he and Piggy find a whole group of boys', and each of the
boys' in the group have their own kind of specialties. That is why, I think that the theme of "Lord
of The Flies" is "Survival of the Fittest." One reason, why I think that this is the theme, is that on

The reason why I chose this page, is because the page is about Ralph during an assembly with all
of the boys'. Also, Ralph who is the chief of the group, is calling this assembly for them to discuss
some changes for the group and talk about a common goal that everybody can work on together.
For example, when Ralph wanted for everybody to work on building shelters (Pg.54), some of the
kids gave him the "death stare" because they think that they have more important things to work
on such as hunting for meat. On the other hand, Ralph is making a smart decision because now
everybody can get to know each other and cooperate with each other to achieve their common
goals. Before, everybody was running around like chickens with their heads cut off but, now
Ralph is making the group more organized and that is what he should be doing as the group's
chief. All in all, this is why I think that the theme of "Lord of The Flies," is "Survival of the
Fittest." With every person the group having positive and negative traits, it will take time for them
to be able to work with each other. Also, each person has their own pros and cons that could
impact on the group in a good way, or a bad way. How, that Ralph has organized the group, Ralph
can now focus on the important things that are needed in a survival situation such as shelter, fire,

more violent and demonstrates that he is capable of committing murder by releasing a rock that kills
Piggy. Moreover, the conch–which is the symbol of order and civilization in Lord of the

and civilization, the boys become more savage and all show that they have the ability to kill.

Even as two of the most civilized characters in Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Piggy still show their
capability to act violently. As Ralph, Jack, and the other older boys return to their shelters from the
Castle Rock–which is where they suspect that the beast would live–the boys encounter a boar and
attempt to kill it. Soon after, the excitement turns into an act of hurting Robert, the pretend pig.

beasts. This shows us that man is civilized in our society, only because of the fear for higher
authority, not because that's their nature.
Man can only cover up inner savagery so long, before it breaks out, given the right situation. This

Fear and intimidation play a significant role in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, just
as a coercion and fear played a large role in the lives of the people ruled by the Axis powers in
WWII. WWII was filled with constant terror and unexpected attacks. On December 7, 1941 Japan
launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attack devastated most of the pacific fleet
stationed in Pearl Harbor. The devastating attack left an aftermath of 2,403 Americans dead, 12
battleships sunk, and 150 aircraft destroyed (Japanese Attack). After the attack many Americans
were filled with fear and anger. Only one day after the attack, President FDR signs the declaration
of war against Japan (US declares war on Japan). The attack on Pearl Harbor caused the divided
US to unify as one on going to war against the Axis powers. Incidentally, In the book The Lord of
the Flies the boys plane had crashed on an island in the pacific. When the plane crashed, it left a
long path of destruction through the forest. After the crash the boys referred to the crash site as
the "Scar". The narrator explained the "Scar" as "Splintered trunks and then the drag, leaving
only a fringe of palms between the scar and the sea" (Golding 10). The Aftermath of both
incidents left the islands in similar conditions. Planes were destroyed and People were confused
and angered as to why it happened to them. The narrator goes further in explaining the crash as
"Darkness of the forest proper and the open space of the scar" (Golding 10). This can be connected
to Pearl Harbor because the survivors of the attack could be said to have darkness in their hearts with
the need for vengeance. The attack left the harbor an open space of destruction just like the plane

Society frees the individual from the tyranny of disorder. When people are working together with
rules, chaos does not occur. In Lord of the Flies, the shell signifies society and order. The book
begins with Ralph and Piggy blowing the conch to call the other boys together to order and unity.
Skinner explains this by people being completely controlled by their environment. The conch is
similar to a bell at school where the boys instinctively come after hearing the noise. I agree that

Ralph and Jack fight over making the fire versus hunting for pigs. This is a conflict of desire
(hunting) and duty (making the fire). I believe people do have to face desire vs. duty decisions in
everyday life. Roger watches the littluns playing and is held back from throwing stones at them.
Rules in his old society told him it was unacceptable to hurt others, and Roger feels controlled by his
old environment (Skinner). Jack hunts and kills the first pig when his responsibility was to keep the
fire going. Jack later hits Piggy after Piggy scolds Jack for letting the fire go out when the ship
went by. Then, while reenacting the hunt of the pig, the boys use Robert to signify the pig, and
Robert begins to fear for his life as the boys get violently carried away with their reenactment.

Task: Does William Golding present a realistic portrayal of how savage humankind can be? Or
does he underestimate the goodness in people? Does Golding's use of WWII as the backdrop have a
significant impact on our understanding of human nature? In William Golding's novel, "The Lord of
the Flies", he displays human nature in an animalistic viewpoint that is not seen in "normal" people.
He describes the unknown savagery of human beings, without missing the good nature found within
us, which allows us to work as a well–organized group. WorldWar Two is also used effectively as a

Being used to that environment, it shows how they too are monsters despite being referred to as
heroes later on at the end of the war.
However, despite all the savagery displayed, Golding shows the goodness in human beings, when
the boys are caring for each other's safety. Most of the boys' humane personality is displayed
during the beginning when they formed a small civilization, chose a leader, and also had rules to
abide by. There was also a good relationship between Piggy and Ralph, who had helped each other
in difficult and humiliating situations. An example of this is seen when Ralph defends Piggy,
when he is laughed at because of his name. Piggy is also seen to be extremely loyal to Ralph. For
example, Piggy suggests using the conch as a tool for speaking and a way to call the others for
meetings. Piggy also displays his loyalty when he stays by Ralph's side throughout the book, despite
having everyone else abandon him and joining Jack and his hunters.
Lastly, the use of WWII as the backdrop for the novel is effective because it shows an accurate
comparison of the events. In both cases, violence and killing occur very often. The events that take
place in the war can be related to many points mentioned on how humankind is savage. The killing
of the sow can easily be related to the accidental or intentional killing of civilians during WWII. In
both cases, the killings of innocent people or children in front of others are examples of the
inhumanity that

known literary criticism. Many schools require their students to read Lord of the Flies because of
the literary criticisms in the book. In this paper three themes or literary criticisms are talked about:

Another topic in Golding's Lord of the Flies is the battle of good vs. evil. Everything seems to start
out just fine on the island; the island seems to be rich with fruit and game and the climate is

The boys are wearing black cloaks "from throat to ankle" showing the subdued state of the boys
before puberty. When they are given permission from Jack to uncover, they emerge as powerful
drives. This is seen when they begin to run wild fetching for wood for the fire, and hunting like
savages (Martin; Golding 34). The competition between good and evil starts with the gradual
struggle between Ralph and Jack, the two oldest boys, for priority. Ralph is the natural leader by
virtue of his superior height, strength, and beauty. His mild expression proclaims him "no devil."
He possesses the symbol of authority, the conch. Jack, on the other hand, is described in
completely different terms; he is distinguished by his ugliness and his red hair, a traditional
demonic conception (Rosenfield). Ralph and Jack do not get along well throughout Lord of the
Flies; Jack has his clan rob and steal from Ralph's camp. Also Piggy and Simon are killed by
Jack's choir boys. After the boys are murdered Jack wants all the power and tries to kill Ralph by
burning down the island. In the process of burning down the island a Navy helicopter rescues the

Lord of the Flies starts out with a plane crashing on an island. The pilot died so the only people

Ralph is the natural leader of the group. He is laid back but everyone knows that he is in charge.
He stays true to himself throughout the entire book, he is one of the few. Jack is more of a pushy
leader, but is definitely a leader. He loses himself in the book by becoming obsessed with hunting.
All he talks about is hunting and wanting to kill. This turns him into a whole new person. Since Jack
is a leader, many of the boys follow his lead by also turning into this crazy being. Jack has a lot of
effect on the others and it is mostly a negative effect. Simon is more of a laid back main character.

civilization. The boys went from having innocent child minds to taking lives of other people,
acting savage, and losing all civilization due to problems on the island. The boys had forgotten
where they came from and became savage in order to survive; it was the need of survival that

Jack knew that it wasn't the beast and it was Simon and didn't tell the boys.
The excessive hunting showed how the boys just killed for no apparent reason; this is not a
normal thing for an innocent boy to do. It seemed as if all jack wanted to do is hunt instead of
caring about protection and shelter. Humans were killed because the boys began to unravel the
true nature of humans. Simon died when Jack said "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill His
Blood!" Simon is eventually stabbed with a spear and that causes his death. The boys devour
what they believe is the beast (Simon) and even if it was the beast, eating a beast doesn't sound
like what 'innocent boys' would do. Piggy's death of course was most certainly not an accident.
Rodger clearly knew what he was doing and he was throwing rocks just aiming to cause harm to
someone, the rock hit Piggy and he fell off Castle Rock and died.
The beastie was like the snake in the story of Adam and Eve from the bible. The beast caused
disruption among the boys and the land just as the snake caused disruption to Adam and Eve. In the
story Adam and Eve they are believed to be innocent souls living in a utopia world, just like the
boys first thought that the land was perfect since there were no adults but then the boys created the
beast that corrupted their innocence. The lack of civilization also was the cause of the loss of
innocence, after the boys had split up, civilization was tarnished

Jack is a boy who start out as a leader in an almost military like stature in charge of the choir. He
becomes with his hunter wanting to make them more powerful and focused an arming them. He
also is desperate to be in charge. In The Lord of the Flies jack says "I ought to be chief" (Golding
22). This shows that he thinks he is the only person who should be leader. When they talk about
the hunters he says "They could be an army" (Golding page 23). This sentence is by the one that
sets up jack's idea of his "hunters" his hunters start out as a group of boys then evolved into this
deadly group of savages that could barely be called human. In later pages jack is desired giving
his army newer weapon and upgrading them. Heinrich Himmler was the head of the Nazi SS, the
Nazi honor guard, and he was obsessed with building this army. "Himmler immediately began

In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," a group of British boys are left on a deserted island in the middle
of nowhere. Throughout the novel, they have conflicts between civilization and savagery, good
vs. evil, order vs. chaos, and reason vs. impulse. What would it be like if the boys were replaced
by a group of girls? Would they behave the same way they did in the novel? I believe that the girls
would act in the same behavior as the boys in all ways because, everyone is installed with evil
inside them which is their natural instinct, also because in life there is always a power struggle in
all manners, and the outcome with the girls would be similar–since both sexes would plan on getting

Secondly, the girls on the island would act the same as the boys in the sense of choosing a leader
and creating rules. With the boys, there is always a power struggle between Jack and Ralph from
the first time they meet. When the time arrives to choose a leader, Jack blurts, "I ought to be

In 'Lord of the Flies', how does Golding explore the main characters' struggle against adversity?
Adversity is presented in many forms during 'Lord of the Flies' for the main character Ralph. It
comes not only in the form of other people but a corruption of what society the boys on the island
have managed to hold onto.
One of the strongest forms of adversity came in the form of a strong and outspoken boy Jack;
Jack often overwhelms and disregards things that Ralph, the chief of the boys on the island, has

He understands what the basics are as he knows they need food, hygiene for safety and smoke signal
for passing ships to see, this is obvious because he knows they need a smoke signal or they 'will die'.
One of the biggest forms of adversity with which the boys struggled was undoubtedly learning to
cope and overcome the fear the littluns had instilled upon themselves associated with 'the beast'.
Golding does this by changing the way Ralph handles the crisis and changing his basic survival
instincts back to that of the society the boys have left behind and learn to be compassionate

amongst everyday people during World War II. The main topic I am researching is how fear played
a role in Lord of the Flies and connecting it to World War II prisoners. What led me to this particular
research is because the perspectives of the boys are easily connectable to the prisoners of war. In

Ralph cares for the greater good of the group of boys rather than just for himself which signifies
one of the traits a leader should have. Golding tries to show that leadership is an important part of
keeping an island civilized and from keeping it stable. Ralph's leadership is the only hope the
boy's have to be able to survive on the island while they wait to be rescued. Ralph's leadership
starts to change as he and Jack have a power struggle because he starts to lose faith in himself as
well as the boys. In a sense, it would seem as though Ralph's leadership was the one to cause the
boys to rebel against being civilized because they didn't want to listen to someone who would tell
them what to do when they could do whatever they wanted and become savages without morals.
Ralph's leadership helps the boy's civilization have stability. Leadership relates to the meaning of
the work as a whole because leadership is what keeps a civilization from going into ruins, but the
boys instinct to do what they want is much greater than that of living a life with rules. Throughout
the novel the boys experience a change from civilization to savagery. The change from civilization
to savagery was in a sense to be awaited because authority was not present but their gruesome roles
in the deaths of two of the boys were not because they're still kids and one wouldn't think kids are
