The Need -
It measures how well are students learning.
It measures how effectively are teachers teaching.
No Child Left Behind
12. Edusoft (The way of Assessment)
âą Assessment is a process that involves defining expected outcomes; creating opportunities for all
students to achieve those outcomes; gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting evidence so
that we may understand and improve student learning (Suskie, 2005).
âą Measuring student learning requires expertise. While knowledge and skills in a major may be
relatively easy to measure directly, measuring critical thinking or even written and oral
communication requires specific assessment expertise. Assessment professionals understand which
areas are best measured by tests and which are best measured by performances or portfolios
graded with rubrics, or field supervisor and employer ratings. Surveys and focus groups are often
used to assess student and alumni satisfaction, however, they do not directly measure student
learning. It is best to have a variety of measures that lead to the same conclusions.
âą Measuring student learning requires resources. The development of good instruments by skilled
staff and purchase of other measures are costly.

Development
ïȘ Get all stakeholders involved with the process of assessment.
ïȘ Develop agreed-upon learning goals and standards for all students. (If there are current
learning goals and standards in place, review them and possibly revise them)
ïȘ Provide a Professional Development for all grade-level and subject-specific teachers and review
the current standards and student performance. Explicit details should be given as to how the
lower percentile students can be reached and helped to excel.
ïȘ Compare and go through data of all classes and grade levels trying to determine the weakness
of the students who are struggling and provide specific instruction that will allow them to
become proficient based on the data that has been collected.
ïȘ Design curriculum and instruction strategies that help students learn established outcomes.
