Pilot project on Altmetrics in UMCG, by Central Medical Library, UMCG. Presentation at Seminar Altmetrics for research evaluation… or not?
Date: 16 NOV 2016
Wednesday November 16th 2016, experts in altmetrics will gather to discuss about this topic and how altmetrics can support Open Science. Several providers with different kind of altmetric tools will provide practical solutions and present use cases.

32. There is a shift in research impact
And it's moving
towards
the research
itself
Still very Exited to work here
Dynamic, combination heath care, education and research inside this house.
Processes that all basically all evolve around INFoRMATION!,
Research, authors
But also excited because what is going on outside!
Great place, exciting environment
Inside but also outside!
Medical library CMB, beautiful place where mainly students use our facilities en services in the physical library.
Staff is mainly using the digital library
But there is a huge part of our services, resources and tool, digital library,
6 years ago, out of dissatisfaction with
Peer review
Citation counting &
Journal impact factors
Have things changes?
Implementation of Pure we finally have one corporate tool for collecting all possible research output & related activities plus press clippings
But to make sure everthing is enclosed , is another story
Show Pure research database live
Research structure, open access
Cmb responsible for UMCG part in collaboration with Reseach Office
Is Altmetrics & Bibliometrics =allmetrics?
I will descibe the situation at UMCG
We are still unhappy the ways things are going in peer review,
more control over citation counting, impact factors.
More and more institutions appoint local research impact specialists, also in libraries.
We dont want to be completely in the hands of commercial parties that control and dictate what & how research impact can be measured.
Open science is also about open impact evaluations. In that light
data about impact and societal relevance should not be soley in the hands of a few commercial parties how ever good their intentions are.
A normal predictable course of developments would be that..at first there is one market leader in Lets say in Altmetrics. Competitors appear, the competition drives evolvement and innovations of which we all benefit. When new standards and definitions have settled, and the market is saturated, the different products will need to make sure interoperability and exchangebility is possible, which wil bring the field to a new higher level
We should not let it happen that the data about the use of our research end up in the same way as the content of the published research. We still can shape the field of measuring research impact, but only if we collaborate, build up expertise and share the outcomes, but for that we need to let go of just traditional citation counting and ranking by itself. Open science is a transition, not moving to another fixed standard we have no control over
