(BBSs)
• Users could share software and data, send private messages, post to public
bulletin boards.
• Starting in the late 80s and early 90s desktop applications from
Compuserve, Prodigy and AOL allowed for more feature -rich social
networks
• Users could now connect to the internet to post personal profiles, post
events, chat and send public and private messages
• 1995: web-based applications Classmates.com and Match.com
created

• 2002: Friendster.com is launched. A dating site not just
about dating. The modern era of social networking begins
• 2003: Intermix Media duplicates core functionality of
Friendster and launches MySpace
• Customizable profiles, focus on music. Takes the lead in social
networking
• 2003-2005: Mark Zuckerberg creates Facebook
• Originally just for alumni and students of Harvard, it expanded to
other universities, then opened to the world in 2006
• In 2008-2009 Facebook overtakes MySpace to be the number one
social network
