There is a lot of evidence for each side with different points of views from the teachers to the kids
to a developmental psychologist, but I'm going to talk about my side of this debate. This is my
report on why uniforms should not be allowed in public schools. Uniforms should not be allowed in
public schools because the cost of uniforms can cause serious financial problems, kids can't express
themselves, and it doesn't affect their learning ability, growth, or their motivation toward school.
My first reason is that if uniforms are allowed in public schools, then kids won't be able to express

They say because everyone looks alike, they won't have pressure for getting expensive clothes to fit
in and won't get bullied for their clothes, but there is no evidence that this is true. They may say that
they won't get bullied for their clothes, but it can become a competition for who looks best in the
uniform or a plus sized girl might get bullied for "not looking good enough" in the uniform. The
uniform might even increase violence. In a study, it showed that when schools went into uniforms,
most of the school's violence went up.
For the record, uniforms should not be allowed in public schools because it can cause issues in a
family with financial problems, kids can't express themselves and feel more comfortable, and most
of all, it doesn't affect things like motivation, attitudes toward schools, academic ability, and the

The need to be a part of the fashion society associated with peer pressure can lead to spending
money that some families can barely afford. On the other hand, some believe that uniforms are an

burden to families, there are many ways to help. According to the MPS uniform code, "if a sincerely
held religious belief, disability, medical condition, financial hardship, or other extenuating
circumstance prevents the child from being in uniform," there will be "countless assistance programs
for low–income families to help parents keep their kids up to code" (Holyoke, 2010). Uniforms will
help parents and educators teach the importance of dressing in a way that shows the student should
be taken seriously. Providing students with uniforms will not only save parents money, but also help
parents teach their kids valuable life lessons about presenting themselves in the correct way outside

Schools around the world have debated whether uniforms are important in the academic success of a
student or not. The debate comes from a place of studying how uniforms benefit or inhibit the
student's social, educational, and behavioral performance. Numerous studies show the varying sides
of the debate, including the pros and cons. The area, type of school, and parental stance is taken into
account when studying the effect of uniforms versus dress code. Uniforms are not beneficial in
schools because they prohibit individuality, diversity, and comfortability of students.
Individuality is affected when a uniform policy is enforced. Uniforms encroach upon freedom of
expression given to students by their First Amendment rights as a citizen of the United States. In the
Supreme Court ruling, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School, freedom of expression
is protected by the Constitution unless it interferes with appropriate discipline. (Oyez) Students
should be allowed to express themselves and how they want to dress. People will express themselves
through other means, like tattoos and piercings. These are a more permanent solution for striving for
individuality instead of wearing what they want. In the University Notre Dame's Sociology
Department conducted a study on the effects of uniforms on students, they discovered that there was
no interference with "substance abuse, behavioral problems or attendance." (The Journal of
Educational Research) The research concluded that not having a uniform does not correlate with the
overall environment of the students. Individuality is what makes up the world we live in and taking
away the individuality takes away the freedom to express who you are and conform to society. The
prohibition of individuality, prohibits diversity in the school. School should be a place of learning
both academically and from the many cultures and religions around us. Uniforms can restrict people
from practicing their religious expression through clothing. School uniforms do not lower chances of
bullying. Texas Southern University conducted a study on uniforms and behavioral atmosphere of
students and saw that "school incidents rose about 12% after the introduction of uniforms". (ProCon)
