Duty is one of the values outlined the Army values. In my opinion it is one of the most important
of all of them. It is very important but without the other values, Duty by itself cannot assist in
accomplishing the mission. We still have the other values like leadership, respect, selfless service,
honesty, integrity, and personal courage. These all set up the framework for us to be able to

As an individual in the Army you have the duty of being a soldier but as a leader you have to be a

Duty and virtue have very immense definitions, from many different aspect of life; therefore, to
elucidate the direction of this essay we are going to study the ethical aspects of these two terms.
Duty is derived from the Greek term Deontology, so the ethics of duty is actually the sequel of

Kant being the deontologist he is, has an ethical view based on duty; that human act by a moral

If duty really is a concept that contains legislation for our actions, then it has to be equal amongst all
rational beings, If something is equal, it is universal.
Kant argues the will must be commanded by the principle; ''one must be able to will that a maxim
of our action should become a universal law.'' This principle is only accomplishable through the
practice of reason free from any incentive or influence, something the hypothetical imperative
cannot do. In practice, this means if genocide was a universal law, the human race would soon

Duty can be defined as the binding or obligatory force of something that is morally or legally right.
Robert Baden–Powell says "We never fail when we try to do our duty,we always fail when we
neglect to do it." This is to say that duty should be held in high regard over a multitude of our
personal values,for by failing to be dutiful and portraying humility within oneself we fail not only
ourselves but those who depend on us. Imagine, the sweltering hot heat of the Afghan
desert,scorching one hundred and twenty degree highs with arrid winds assaults your flesh

This is as a soldier the single most important question one can ask themselves to truly find where
their priorities lie. Rather it be laying down life and limb in service to ones country leaving this
world the same way we entered,kicking and screaming,one must always hold true to their duties
despite adversity.The army values read "I will always place the mission first. I will never accept
defeat.I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade." In the aforementioned scenario note
that despite having a bit of fear the portrayed character is still ready and willing to sacrifice
themselves in order to protect and defend the lives of their comrades as well as the supplies.
